Backward design is an approach to planning that starts with defining the desired results by focusing on what students should know, understand, and be able to do after instruction. It uses assessments to determine the intended learning outcomes and then designs lessons, activities and instruction to help students achieve those outcomes. The process involves identifying desired results through key understandings, knowledge and skills (KUDs) students should acquire and using pre-assessments to target instruction rather than being content-driven.
