Hacking AMD MIOpen to run anywhere

As soon as a security expert looks at the firmware and code of IoT devices, 2017 may as well be 1997: format string bugs, basic stack overflows and hardcoded credentials arise. Zero-days are actually forever-days. We will look at a number of real world cases of industrial and consumer IoT devices we tested and broke, and besides analyzing the most common and most outstanding findings, we will wonder why we seem unable to kill these pests once and forever.

The last 5 years, Kafka and Flink have become mature technologies that have allowed us to embrace the streaming paradigm. You can bet on them to build reliable and efficient applications. They are active projects backed by companies using them in production. They have a good community contributing, and sharing experience and knowledge. Kafka and Flink are solid choices if you want to build a data platform that your data scientists or developers can use to collect, process, and distribute data. You can put together Kafka Connect, Kafka, Schema Registry, and Flink. First, you will take care of their deployment. Then, for each case, you will setup each part, and of course develop the Flink job so it can integrate easily with the rest. Looks like a challenging but exciting project, isn't it? In this session, you will learn how you can build such data platform, what are the nitty-gritty of each part, how you can plug them together, in particular how to plug Flink in the Kafka ecosystem, what are the common pitfalls to avoid, and what it requires to be deployed on kubernetes. Even if you are not familiar with all the technologies, there will be enough introduction so you can follow. Come and learn how we can actually cross the streams!

A few months ago I publicly disclosed an Apple EFI firmware zero day. It was a very powerful bug allowing direct access to the EFI firmware from the operating system. EFI rootkits are some of the most powerful and most interesting rootkits. Because they work at a very low level they can play a lot of tricks to hide themselves from forensics and persist for a long time. EFI monsters are a bit like jaguars, stealthy and rarely seen by humans. This doesn't mean they do not exist. EFI monsters are most certainly part of spy agencies rootkits catalog. Very few tools exist to chase them.
This talk is about introducing you to the EFI world so you can also start to chase these monsters. EFI world might look scary but it's a bit easier than you think and a lot of fun.
Thunderstrike 2 (to be presented at BlackHat) is a fine example of the power of EFI rootkits and the problems they present.
Perl6 meets JVM

How to monitor unknown third party code? One of the hardest challenges we face running Clever Cloud, apart from the impressive scale we face with hundreds of new applications per week, is the monitoring of unknown tech stacks. The first goal of rebuilding the monitoring platform was to accommodate the immutable infrastructure pattern that generates lots of ephemeral hosts every minute. The traditional approach is to focus on VMs or hosts, not applications. We needed to shift this into an approach of auto-discovery of metrics to monitor, allowing third party code to publish new items. This talk explains our journey in building Clever Cloud Metrics stack, heavily based on Warp10 (Kafka/Hadoop/Storm based) to deliver developer efficiency and trustability to our clients applications.

How to monitor unknown third party code? One of the hardest challenges we face running Clever Cloud, apart from the impressive scale we face with hundreds of new applications per week, is the monitoring of unknown tech stacks. The first goal of rebuilding the monitoring platform was to accommodate the immutable infrastructure pattern that generates lots of ephemeral hosts every minute. The traditional approach is to focus on VMs or hosts, not applications. We needed to shift this into an approach of auto-discovery of metrics to monitor, allowing third party code to publish new items. This talk explains our journey in building Clever Cloud Metrics stack, heavily based on Warp10 (Kafka/Hadoop/Storm based) to deliver developer efficiency and trustability to our clients applications.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
