Merlinda was born in St. Lucia and grew up in a large family with six sisters and six brothers. She attended primary and secondary school on the island of Choiseul in St. Lucia. After completing secondary school, she furthered her education at Vieux- Fort Comprehensive where she studied mathematics, accounts, and sociology. Merlinda has worked as a teacher at her former primary and secondary schools and currently serves as a sports coordinator and guider. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, dancing, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. Her future plans include getting married, having two children, and pursuing studies in social psychology at the University of the West Indies
