ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের ইতিহাসে বঙ্গভঙ্গ এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থান দখল করে আছে। ১৭৫৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ২৩ই জুন ভগিরতি নদীর তীরে পলাশীর আম বাগানে বাংলা, বিহার ও উডিষ্যার শেষ স্বাধীন নবাব সিরাদ্দৌলার পরাজয়ের মাধ্যমে এ ভারতীয় মহাদেশে ইংরেজদের শাষনের গোডাপত্তন হয়। তৎকালীন বাংলা, বিহার, উডিষ্যা, আসাম ও আরো কিছু অঞ্চল নিয়ে গঠিত হয়েছিল বাংলা প্রেসিডেন্সি। এর আয়তন বিশাল হওয়াই পুরো বাংলা প্রেসিডেন্সিকে একসাথে শাষন করা ব্রিটিশদের পক্ষে প্রায় অসম্ভব ছিল। ১৯০৩ সালে লর্ড কার্জন (যার নামে বর্তমান ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কার্জন হল) এ অঞ্চলের বড় লাট সাহেব হয়ে আসলে তিনি বাংলাকে বিভাজন করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় তিনি ১৯০৫ সালের পহেলা সেপ্টেম্বর বঙ্গভঙ্গ করে রাজশাহী, ঢাকা, চট্ট্রগাম ও আসামকে নিয়ে গঠিত করেন পূর্ব বঙ্গ যার রাজধানী হয় ঢাকা। এ সময় লর্ড কার্জন বঙ্গভঙ্গের পক্ষে ঢাকার নওয়াব সলিমুল্লাহ সহ অনেক মুসলিম নেত্রিবৃন্দের সমর্থন লাভ করেন যদিও হিন্দুরা এর ঘোর বিরোধিতা করেছিল।
