We were addressing two critical design questions in our approach: 1) Strategy has its roots in competition and while nonprofits certainly compete (with other sectors, with substitute offerings, and with each other), how can we connect a strategy conversation to a nonprofit's first focus, that is, creating value for its community? And 2) What is a useful workshop for staff at all levels, some of whom may be involved in formal strategic planning activities and many of whom will not? Our approach was to frame all conversations around the question, “How can you create the most value?” and focus on “strategic thinking” rather than strategic planning.
