1. Discussion Questions for June 16
1. Sociologists see subjective well-being as quot;
culture specificquot;
, do you agree with this formulation? Why? If you agree, what model of well-being could you put forward that could describe or would be most applicable to your cultural context (this could be your cultural group or a more specific group that you belong to)?
2. Some sociologists suggest that subjective well-being depends on shared notions about life. Do you agree? What then is the role of unique personal experiences?
Discussion Questions for June 23
1. In Chapter 6 Schimmack provided an extensive discussion of the bottom-up and top-down models of SWB. The author provided empirical studies that supported these competing models and it was concluded in the end that an integrated model may be most appropriate in describing the relationship among LS, DS, and Personality. Try to carefully review your own experience of Life Satisfaction and Satisfaction with specific Life Domains, and then explore how these cognitive evaluations have been influenced by your personality. Describe how your experience-based model connects the three aforementioned variables.
2. Shimmack also extensively discussed the independence of PA and NA. How does this clarification of the nature of the affective components of SWB impinge on the way you will be designing interventions that would enhance SWB in your field of specialization? Show how you can utilize this finding in developing interventions.
3. In Chapter 7 Pavot presented the current measures that have been developed in assessing SWB. If you were to develop an outcome measure to determine whether an intervention you have developed were effective in enhancing SWB, which of the measures will you employ and why? 4. Describe some unique ways by which your culture assesses SWB. Do these still influence the way you evaluate your own SWB?
