At the beginning of the semester, we discussed the crucial difference between a course in History or Anthropology and a course in Humanities : Humanities not only looks at a culture’s experiences (or struggles, to be consistent with the name of our course) but at the human reaction to these experiences . That always involves artistic expression, particularly writing. We have read numerous examples of storytelling from ancient times to modern – Gilgamesh; The Iliad; Beowulf; The Tempest; “My Kinsman, Major Molineux”; “The Wife of His Youth”; “The Swimmer”; “Hairball”; and “Age of Lead.” Choose one of these and write a standard five-paragraph essay discussing how it reflects issues that the culture it comes from had to deal with and shows attempts to explain/cope with that experience. .

Atomic models are useful because they allow us to picture what is inside of an atom, something we will never be able to actually see. We're going to talk about two models, the Bohr model and the Quantum model. While we know that the Quantum model is the correct way to represent atoms, the Bohr model is still useful for a very basic understanding. Think of it as a stick figure sketch of an atom. The parts are all there, its just not quite filled in all of the way.
Bohr Model
The Bohr model of the atom was developed in 1914 by Niels Bohr. In this model, electrons move around the nucleus in fixed, concentric circles. Picture the planets orbiting the Sun. These circles are called energy levels and electrons must have a specific amount of energy to be in each level. The energy levels closest to the nucleus require the least amount of energy. In order for an electron to move further from the nucleus (or move up an energy level) they must gain energy. If they lose energy they fall down to an energy level closer to the nucleus.
Drawing the Bohr model for an atom gives you valuable information about the atom's valence electrons. The

l--are the ones that determine the chemical properties of an atom. In order to draw a Bohr model you must first use the periodic table to tell you the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. For Bohr models we usually draw what the "average" atom for that element looks like and just round the average atomic mass to a whole number and use that for the mass number.
Steps for Drawing a Bohr Model:
1. Count the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons for that atom.
2. Draw the nucleus. Indicate the correct number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
3. Draw energy levels around the nucleus, starting with the energy level closest to the nucleus. Fill up each energy level before moving on to the next.
Each energy level in a Bohr model can only hold a specific number of electrons, as shown in the table below.

the consulting firm Accenture with Tiger Woods
striding through tall grass. The tagline reads, “The road
to high performance isn’t always paved.” To which the
obvious rejoinder these days is “Sometimes it runs
straight into a fire hydrant.” Jokes about Woods’s
current woes come easy, but the story is not trivial—at
least, not in terms of money. Woods has been the best-
paid athlete in the world for almost a decade, and much
of that income is from endorsements; ESPN once
estimated that his lifetime earnings could total as much
as six billion dollars. When the scandal erupted,
journalists and brand-marketing experts alike insisted
that it would have little impact on Woods’s advertising appeal, and his sponsors—including Nike,
Gillette, and Gatorade—quickly affirmed their support for him. But, from the start, this attitude
seemed like wishful thinking. The problem isn’t a question of morals, exactly; it’s that a huge gap
has opened up between Woods’s advertising persona and his public image. With every new
revelation, it seems that the biggest career in sports is being reshaped before our eyes.
The fact that a golfer’s marital troubles might affect the bottom line of a multinational is a
relatively recent phenomenon. Although athletes have been endorsing products for more than a
century—beginning, by most accounts, in 1905, when Honus Wagner put his name on Louisville
Slugger bats—the importance of endorsements to the sports economy really dates back to the
sixties, when Arnold Palmer and his agent, Mark McCormack, effectively invented the athlete as
brand, with Palmer the quintessential Everyman fronting for companies like Pennzoil, Hertz, and
Sears. In the eighties, Michael Jordan took the endorsement game to a new level, perfecting the
iconic association of athlete and individual product with the Air Jordan line, while his off-the-court
bonhomie made him an ideal spokesman for brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Hanes.
Woods, in turn, has broken new ground by becoming the face of Accenture, a company whose
customers are corporations rather than ordinary consumers. Like his predecessors, he has endorsed
sports products and consumer goods. But he has also become a kind of ubiquitous symbol of the
business world.
There is a logic to this. Unlike Palmer or Jordan, Woods never seemed warm or even especially
personable. Instead, he seemed resolutely businesslike. Woods’s appeal was based, ultimately, not
on his physical abilities but on his mental toughness, his extraordinary capacity for focus and
discipline. He was the man who always made the key putt, who never cracked under pressure. That’s
why Gatorade, introducing a new drink with his face on the label, called the drink Tiger Focus. And
it’s why the most powerful Nike ad about him is the one in which his father, in a voice-o.

In this week’s lab, you will examine variation in Mendelian traits with your classmates. From this information, you will determine the phenotypes and potential genotypes found in our classroom. Put simply, a phenotype is a physical trait that we can observe (e.g., presence of a widow’s peak or absence of mid-digital hair). Some people will call phenotypes “variants” or “traits” so pay attention when these words are used in class! The phenotype is controlled in large part by the genotype, which is the genetic composition of an organism, represented by pairs of alleles (e.g., AA, Aa, or aa). As an example, the genotype “aa”might control for the phenotype “dimples,” while the genotypes AA and Aa control for the phenotype “no dimples.”
SIMPLE AND COMPLEX TRAITS
Mendelian(or “simple”) traits are traits that exhibit a simple inheritance pattern with a limited amount of genetic and phenotypic variation. Mendelian traits, therefore, are controlled for by a single genetic locus and are physically expressed as traits that are usually either present or absent. Simple traits tend not to be influenced by the environment because they are not major contributors to natural selection (in which the environment is a key element).
Non-Mendelian (or “complex”) traits are traits that follow an inheritance pattern in which the genotype sets the genetic “potential” for a trait, while the physical and cultural environment impacts how the phenotype will be expressed (i.e., what you will look like, do, etc.). Close to 100% of HUMAN traits are inherited in a complex fashion, which makes it difficult for researchers to determine the underlying causes leading people to behave and even respond to treatment for diseases in different ways.
Simple inheritance can be easily tracked by looking at phenotypes- as you will learn in class, Mendel used the phenotypic differences in the shape and color of pea plant flowers, pea plant leaves, pea pods, and the peas inside the pods to track simple inheritance patters. On the other hand, complex inheritance patterns require much more sophisticated methods for locating genetic differences because the combination of allele pairs is only ONE part of what gives you your phenotype. In this week’s lab you will explore several “simple traits” like earlobe shape and the ability to roll your tongue.

The Bohr model of the atom was developed in 1914 by Niels Bohr. In this model, electrons move around the nucleus in fixed, concentric circles. Picture the planets orbiting the Sun. These circles are called energy levels and electrons must have a specific amount of energy to be in each level. The energy levels closest to the nucleus require the least amount of energy. In order for an electron to move further from the nucleus (or move up an energy level) they must gain energy. If they lose energy they fall down to an energy level closer to the nucleus.
Drawing the Bohr model for an atom gives you valuable information about the atom's valence electrons. The

l--are the ones that determine the chemical properties of an atom. In order to draw a Bohr model you must first use the periodic table to tell you the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom. For Bohr models we usually draw what the "average" atom for that element looks like and just round the average atomic mass to a whole number and use that for the mass number.
Steps for Drawing a Bohr Model:
1. Count the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons for that atom.
2. Draw the nucleus. Indicate the correct number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
3. Draw energy levels around the nucleus, starting with the energy level closest to the nucleus. Fill up each energy level before moving on to the next.
Each energy level in a Bohr model can only hold a specific number of electrons, as shown in the table below.

You try drawing one for Magnesium (Mg) and for Boron (B). Count the number of electrons on the outermost energy level to find the number of valence electrons. Check your answers by looking at the handout.
Quantum Model
In 1925 the Quantum model of the atom was developed after it was determined that electrons can behave like a wave and a particle at the same time. In addition, you can't know the precise location of an electron. Instead of traveling in orderly circles around the nucleus, we describe the electrons as existing in a three-dimensional
electron cloud
--a shape surrounding the nucleus. You will learn more about the Quantum model in chemistry.

recent issue of Forbes features a full-page ad for
the consulting firm Accenture with Tiger Woods
striding through tall grass. The tagline reads, “The road
to high performance isn’t always paved.” To which the
obvious rejoinder these days is “Sometimes it runs
straight into a fire hydrant.” Jokes about Woods’s
current woes come easy, but the story is not trivial—at
least, not in terms of money. Woods has been the best-
paid athlete in the world for almost a decade, and much
of that income is from endorsements; ESPN once
estimated that his lifetime earnings could total as much
as six billion dollars. When the scandal erupted,
journalists and brand-marketing experts alike insisted
that it would have little impact on Woods’s advertising appeal, and his sponsors—including Nike,
Gillette, and Gatorade—quickly affirmed their support for him. But, from the start, this attitude
seemed like wishful thinking. The problem isn’t a question of morals, exactly; it’s that a huge gap
has opened up between Woods’s advertising persona and his public image. With every new
revelation, it seems that the biggest career in sports is being reshaped before our eyes.
The fact that a golfer’s marital troubles might affect the bottom line of a multinational is a
relatively recent phenomenon. Although athletes have been endorsing products for more than a
century—beginning, by most accounts, in 1905, when Honus Wagner put his name on Louisville
Slugger bats—the importance of endorsements to the sports economy really dates back to the
sixties, when Arnold Palmer and his agent, Mark McCormack, effectively invented the athlete as
brand, with Palmer the quintessential Everyman fronting for companies like Pennzoil, Hertz, and
Sears. In the eighties, Michael Jordan took the endorsement game to a new level, perfecting the
iconic association of athlete and individual product with the Air Jordan line, while his off-the-court
bonhomie made him an ideal spokesman for brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Hanes.
Woods, in turn, has broken new ground by becoming the face of Accenture, a company whose
customers are corporations rather than ordinary consumers. Like his predecessors, he has endorsed
sports products and consumer goods. But he has also become a kind of ubiquitous symbol of the
business world.
There is a logic to this. Unlike Palmer or Jordan, Woods never seemed warm or even especially
personable. Instead, he seemed resolutely businesslike. Woods’s appeal was based, ultimately, not
on his physical abilities but on his mental toughness, his extraordinary capacity for focus and
discipline. He was the man who always made the key putt, who never cracked under pressure. That’s
why Gatorade, introducing a new drink with his face on the label, called the drink Tiger Focus. And
it’s why the most powerful Nike ad about him is the one in which his father, in a voice-o.

In this week’s lab, you will examine variation in Mendelian traits with your classmates. From this information, you will determine the phenotypes and potential genotypes found in our classroom. Put simply, a phenotype is a physical trait that we can observe (e.g., presence of a widow’s peak or absence of mid-digital hair). Some people will call phenotypes “variants” or “traits” so pay attention when these words are used in class! The phenotype is controlled in large part by the genotype, which is the genetic composition of an organism, represented by pairs of alleles (e.g., AA, Aa, or aa). As an example, the genotype “aa”might control for the phenotype “dimples,” while the genotypes AA and Aa control for the phenotype “no dimples.”
SIMPLE AND COMPLEX TRAITS
Mendelian(or “simple”) traits are traits that exhibit a simple inheritance pattern with a limited amount of genetic and phenotypic variation. Mendelian traits, therefore, are controlled for by a single genetic locus and are physically expressed as traits that are usually either present or absent. Simple traits tend not to be influenced by the environment because they are not major contributors to natural selection (in which the environment is a key element).
Non-Mendelian (or “complex”) traits are traits that follow an inheritance pattern in which the genotype sets the genetic “potential” for a trait, while the physical and cultural environment impacts how the phenotype will be expressed (i.e., what you will look like, do, etc.). Close to 100% of HUMAN traits are inherited in a complex fashion, which makes it difficult for researchers to determine the underlying causes leading people to behave and even respond to treatment for diseases in different ways.
Simple inheritance can be easily tracked by looking at phenotypes- as you will learn in class, Mendel used the phenotypic differences in the shape and color of pea plant flowers, pea plant leaves, pea pods, and the peas inside the pods to track simple inheritance patters. On the other hand, complex inheritance patterns require much more sophisticated methods for locating genetic differences because the combination of allele pairs is only ONE part of what gives you your phenotype. In this week’s lab you will explore several “simple traits” like earlobe shape and the ability to roll your tongue.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
