Assignment 02
Considerations in Farm Site Selection
2
The whole future success of the farm or agribusiness depends on the
selection of a good site for a farm or enterprise. The management of the farm,
layout will influenced by the kind of the site that selected. However, the site will
affect the cost of construction, the ease with management, amount of crop/
animal/ agro- product that produced. In generally, the whole economy of the
agribusiness.
Therefore, before starting to look for a suitable site, should have a clear idea of
the farm that wish to start. So, mainly consider about following factors.
1.) Ecological factors
2.) Biological factors and Operational factors
3.) Economic factors and Social factors
1.) Ecological factors
When consider about ecological factors that affect to the farm site selection can
be divided into six sub topics. They are,
 Land
 Climate
 Soil
 Water availability, supply and quality
 Land
Should be confirmed that the proposed land area is suitable for establish a farm.
Therefore, should be confirmed about,
- Is the land steeper sloppy or not? :
If it is steeper sloppy, cost of construction will be high. Because of extra
cost need to construct the land as a suitable for a farm.
- Is it wasteland?
Unsuitable for direct use of agriculture purposes.
- The elevation and flood level :
Elevation is need to determine the land is suitable or not for an
agriculture purpose that need to establish. And flood level is need to
determine whether the land have an effect from flood or not.
- Cost of the land :
It helps to determine initial capital that use to start the business/ farm.
- The shape and size of the land :
The land is a regular shape and extensive, enough for future expansion.
3
 Climate
Important to climatological factors for a farm establishment. Because of the
agribusiness is almost always depend on climatic factors whether it affect badly
or better upon agriculture. Therefore consider about following factors is
necessary.
- Mean monthly temperature
- Mean monthly rainfall
- Mean monthly evaporation
- Mean monthly relative humidity
- Mean monthly sunshine
- Mean monthly wind speed and direction
Obviously, the longer period records are better to use to take details. Although all
the climatic conditions are compatible with crops that cultivation or animals that
reared.
 Soil
Need well drainage, fertilize soil for starting a crop farms. Soil erosion should be
minimized. If site selection for a livestock farm, soil must be well drainage, free
from obstacles such as rocks, light sandy soil is better. When select a site for crop
cultivation level of drainage of soil, pH level, salinity/ alkaline level, water holding
capacity, soil fertility etc. need to consider.
 Water availability, supply and quality
Need sufficient quantity of quality, clean water for any type of agriculture farm.
Before select the site, observe the water resource is reliable and free from
chemical, physical and biological pollutant.
2.) Biological and operational factors
Before select the site for a farm, consider about following factors.
Biological factors:
- Crop species to be cultivated or livestock species to be reared
- Resources and availability of store them
- Influence of pet and diseases
Operational factors:
- Type of farm establish
+ Small scale farm
4
+ Large scale farm
- Type of farming system
+ Extensive farm
+ Semi –intensive farm
+ Intensive farm
- Farm operation method
+ Integrated system
+ Multiple crop cultivation
+ Diversification etc.
- Production target
- Estimated size of area required
- Estimated number of buildings needed
- Estimated number of labors, machineries required
3.) Economic and social factors
The most important economic and social factors are,
Economic factors:
- Availability of skilled and semi- skilled labors
- Availability of staff with adequate experience of management
- Availability of market demand and location of markets (near or distance
from the farm)
- Availability of fertilizers, feeds, drugs, chemical materials, construction
materials etc.
- Availability of equipment, materials needed for running the farm
- Information on local financing methods and credits
- Cost of equipment, services and supplies needed for running the farm
Social factors:
- Ownership, availability of land and land values, land regulations and
rights, although any legal restrictions relating to the land
- Politic realities
- Development plans for farm area
- Availability of electricity, telephone, as well as suitable transport facilities
- Reasonable amenities for permanent staff, such as schools, shopping
facilities, hospital etc.
- Population of the region
