Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Pasukan Zamrud II yang diketuai oleh Anas, dan dianggotai oleh adiknya Aina serta empat
rakannya, iaitu Pauline, Anjali, Adeen, dan Zuriani menyertai Pertandingan Avatari Kebangsaan
Kali Kesepuluh yang berlangsung di Kompleks Anggun. Tujuan mereka menyertai pertandingan
ini adalah untuk mengulangi kejayaan Pasukan Zamrud yang diketuai oleh ayah Anas,
Profesor Fitri yang telah menjadi juara pertandingan Avatari sepuluh tahun dahulu. Sebelum
pertandingan, mereka telah menjalani beberapa sesi latihan yang keras seperti latihan silat,
latihan kecergasan, dan latihan menempuh halangan yang dijalankan oleh Cikgu Nisah.
Pertandingan Avatari ini ialah pertandingan kembara di ruang siber atau adventure game bagi
makhluk janaan komputer yang dipanggil avatar. Pertandingan yang menggunakan rangkaian
Internet ini dijalankan serentak di seluruh dunia. Terdapat empat peringkat yang perlu dilalui
oleh setiap pasukan untuk menjuarai pertandingan yang menawarkan hadiah sebanyak satu
juta Ringgit Malaysia ini. Untuk peringkat pertama, seratus pasukan terbaik akan layak ke
peringkat kedua. Pada pusingan kedua pula, hanya dua puluh pasukan terbaik yang akan
dipilih. Selepas disaring dalam pusingan ketiga, hanya lima pasukan terbaik yang akan
meneruskan cabaran ke pusingan yang keempat, iaitu pusingan terakhir.
Pasukan Zamrud II telah berusaha dengan gigih dan berjuang bermati-matian untuk melepasi
halangan dan cabaran yang terdapat dalam setiap pusingan. Di samping itu, mereka juga
terpaksa menghadapi ancaman dari dalam pasukan sendiri kerana salah seorang ahli pasukan
mereka, iaitu Anjali telah mensabotaj pasukan dengan mencuri cip pemecut mesin Avatari.
Masalah menjadi rumit apabila Aina cedera parah akibat ditembak oleh penjahat ketika pasukan
mereka bersiap sedia untuk ke pusingan akhir. Namun begitu, semua halangan dan masalah
dapat diatasi oleh Pasukan Zamrud II, dan akhirnya pasukan mereka telah menjuarai
pertandingan tersebut.

Sinopsis
2. Kesungguhan dan semangat perjuangan yang tinggi untuk mencapai matlamat. Pasukan
Zamrud II yang terdiri daripada Anas, Aina, Adeen, Pauline, Anjali, dan Zuriani berlatih
bersungguh-sungguh sebagai persediaan menghadapi pertandingan Avatari Kebangsaan Kali
Kesepuluh. Semasa pertandingan mereka berjuang bermati-matian sehingga mereka berjaya
menjuarai pertandingan tersebut.
1. Persoalan persiapan untuk menghadapi sesuatu pertandingan
Anas dan ahli-ahli kumpulannya berlatih bersungguh-sungguh untuk menyertai
Pertandingan Avatari Kebangsaan Kali Kesepuluh yang berlangsung di Kompleks Anggun.
2. Persoalan kesabaran dalam menghadapi cabaran hidup
Keluarga Anas masih sabar dan dapat meneruskan kehidupan seperti biasa walaupun
ayahnya, Profesor Fitri masih hilang semasa mengikuti ekspedisi rahsia di Lautan
Andaman.
3. Persoalan hubungan kekeluargaan yang erat
Anas amat mengambil berat akan adiknya, Aina.
4. Persoalan sokongan moral ibu bapa untuk memastikan kejayaan anak
Puan Maizan, Pak Cik Ho dan Mak Cik Angie sentiasa berada di tempat pertandingan
Avatari untuk memberikan sokongan moral kepada anak-anak mereka.
5. Persoalan golongan remaja yang suka menghabiskan masa dengan permainan video
Anjali dan Sudin bermain permainan Robot War di Pusat Permainan Video Game Star yang
penuh sesak dengan pengunjung yang terdiri daripada golongan remaja.

Ahli-ahli Pasukan Zamrud II yang terdiri daripada Anas, Aina, Pauline, Anjali, Adeen, dan
Zuriani dapat bekerjasama tanpa mengira perbezaan kaum.

Permulaan
Aina mengajak abangnya, Anas untuk mengambil bahagian dalam Pertandingan Avatari
Kebangsaan Kali Kesepuluh yang berlangsung di Kompleks Anggun. Mereka menubuhkan
Pasukan Zamrud II yang diketuai oleh Anas, dan dianggotai oleh adiknya Aina serta empat
rakan mereka, iaitu Pauline, Anjali, Adeen, dan Zuriani.
Perkembangan
Pasukan Zamrud II menjalani latihan sebagai persediaan untuk pertandingan. Berkat kegigihan
dan kerjasama berpasukan, mereka berjaya melepasi halangan dan cabaran dalam pusingan
pertama, pusingan kedua, dan pusingan ketiga. Anjali telah mensabotaj Pasukan Zamrud II
dengan mencuri cip pemecut mesin Avatari.

6. Puncak
Semasa Pasukan Zamrud II bersedia ke peringkat keempat, iaitu pusingan akhir pertandingan,
Aina cedera ditembak di bahu oleh penjahat yang cuba mencuri baju-baju khas pertandingan
Avatari di bilik persalinan. Aina dibawa ke hospital dan tempatnya digantikan oleh Zuriani.
Peleraian
Pasukan Zamrud II menjuarai menyertai Pertandingan Avatari Kebangsaan Kali Kesepuluh dan
memenangi hadiah sebanyak hadiah sebanyak satu juta Ringgit Malaysia. Aina yang masih
dirawat di hospital mendapat berita gembira bahawa ayahnya, iaitu Profesor Muhammad Fitri
dan kumpulan penyelidik yang hilang di Lautan Andaman telah dijumpai.
