The document provides an overview of the major religions in several Southeast Asian countries based on census data from each country between 2000-2010. It shows that:
- Buddhism is the dominant religion in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, ranging from 67-93.4% of the population.
- Islam is the dominant religion in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, ranging from 60.4-86.1% of the population.
- Christianity is the dominant religion in the Philippines at 92.5% of the population, with Catholicism being the largest Christian denomination at 80.9%.
The document discusses how the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will connect countries in the ASEAN region, impacting markets through connections between institutions, infrastructure, and people. This will result in new diverse markets and "ASEAN diasporas" within countries. To understand evolving consumers, companies must examine similarities and differences in ethnicity, religion, language, and diets among ASEAN countries. New approaches are needed to study consumers as individuals and gain insights beyond demographics. This will help companies develop appropriate products for the various ASEAN sub-markets and new consumers.

5. ASEAN COMMUNITY
The cultures of the ASEAN countries are
as diverse as their ethnic communities
and historical experiences, though the
histories of the countries overlap and
interweave on countless fronts. With each
country having a unique blend of
ethnicities, religions, and languages,
Southeast Asia is a sundry mix matched by
few other areas on the planet.

6. LANGUAGES
• The plethora of languages spoken in Southeast
Asia is a testament to the diversity of the
region. Each country has many native and
regional languages. They range from the Sinitic
languages spoken by the Chinese populations to
the Tai languages, which include the national
languages of both Thailand and Laos. Colonial
languages, including French, Dutch, Portuguese,
Spanish and English are also spoken.

7. BELIEFS AND RELIGION
• Southeast Asia boasts immense religious diversity. In
some places, native religions still exist. These religions
are animist in style wherein everything is oriented
toward the seasons and nature.
• The civilizations and religions of both East and West
have had lasting impacts. The largest and most
universalistic religions of the world, including Hinduism,
Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam and Christianity, are
practiced here.

8. External Influences
• None of the region’s cultures have been untouched by
external influences. Even the most traditional societies have
been impacted. Sunni Islam has put down strong roots in
Malaysia and Indonesia. Theravada Buddhism flourishes in
Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. Buddhism and
Confucianism are resurgent in communist Vietnam. The
Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asean.
