Nassau County fire officials claim that the owner of Hempstead Village apartments delayed installing a new automatic fire alarm system, despite previous violations and an order to upgrade the system before Hurricane Sandy. A fire in February claimed two lives and forced 250 residents from their homes while the installation was still underway. The fire marshal said the property owner and manager had been "dragging their feet" on installing the new system to replace an inadequate "Band-Aid system."
