THE	SUPPLY	CHAIN
MANAGER
THROUGHOUT	TIME

Today,	companies	in	the	aviation	industry	are
forced	to	optimise	their	processes
continuously.	How ever,	the	internal
rationalization	measures	inevitably	reach	their
limits.	The	search	for	further	improvements
then	goes	beyond	the	borders	of	the

company	itself.	In	my	blog	post	you	can
read	about	how supply	chain	managers
optimize	production	processes	and	meet
new challenges.

SOLAR	PLANE	HAS	FLOWN	AROUND	THE	WORLD
The	tw o	pilots	Bertrand	Piccard	and	André	Boschberg	have	made	a	dream	come	true	w ith
their	entire	team.	They	flew more	than	40,000	kilometres	around	the	w orld	w ith	the	solar
plane	"Solar	Impulse	2".	On	26	July	2016,	the	solar	plane	landed	again	in	Abu	Dhabi	after	16
stops	-	the	starting	point	of	the	historic	journey.	The	project	is	to	promote	the	potential	of
renew able	energy	and	the	associated	improved	quality	of	life	and	also	to	advertise
inventiveness.	17,000	solar	cells	are	mounted	on	the	w ings	w hich	generate	electricity	for	the
four	propellers.	Batteries	are	used	as	a	storage	medium	and	also	make	night	flights	possible.
How ever,	the	mission	w as	not	alw ays	smooth.	On	the	flight	from	Japan	to	Haw aii,	the
batteries	w ere	damaged,	so	the	pilot	had	to	make	a	nine-month	forced	break.	Shortly	before
the	final	leg	to	Abu	Dhabi,	there	w as	a	one-w eek	delay	because	Piccard	became	ill	and	the
w eather	did	not	cooperate.
