This document reviews the literature on benthic marine algae found on coral reefs in Brazil. It finds that around 700 taxa of algae have been recorded on Brazilian coral reefs, with 78% found along discontinuous reef formations. Rhodophyta is the most common and diverse division. While species richness is lower on coral reefs compared to other coastal habitats, turf and fleshy macroalgae are abundant. Several genera are highlighted as conspicuous components of the reefs, including Halimeda, Dictyota, and Gracilaria. The roles of algae in the structure and competition within coral reef communities is also discussed.
