2. REPETITION:
Both, The Colosseum and the Nassau
Veterans Memorial Coliseum show
repetition throughout their seating
arrangements. If you look at both
monuments you see that the seats both
repeat in a way. In both monuments they
are arranged in a stacked circular pattern
around the arena. This shows repetition
because it is the same thing occurring
repeatedly. In this case we see the seats
next to each other, repeatedly.
3. TEXTURE:
Both monuments have actual texture. For
example if you were to be at one of these
places and felt the things that were inside
such as the seats, the walls, or the ice you
would be able to feel how the feel. In the
Roman Colosseum if you were to touch the
seats it would be bumpy, and rough because
it has been there for ages and has broken
down and cracked throughout time as well as
made from concrete. On the other hand if
you were in the Nassau Veterans Memorial
Coliseum and reached out to touch the seats,
they would be smooth and because they are
made from plastic as fell as fabric for
cushion.
4. EMPHASIS:
Overall, both monuments have the same emphasis.
The emphasis in both is where the action happens.
In the Roman colosseum we see the emphasis on
the platform where the fighting occurs. In the
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum the emphasis
is on the ice rink where the hockey players
compete. In both places there is a lot going on
around the platform where the action happens.
The platform being empty and similar leads the
eye to gravitate towards it.
5. BALANCE:
Balance operates well in both the Nassau
Veterans Memorial Coliseum and The
Colosseum. The Nassau Veterans Memorial
Coliseum is very symmetrical. For example, if
you were to take something and cut it
straight down the middle either horizontally
or vertically it would be the same on both
sides. This place is balanced because of the
symmetry it is. The Colosseum is comparable
to the way it is balanced as to the Nassau
Veterans Memorial Coliseum. We see balance
throughout The Colosseum. We see it the
same way we see the balance in the other
monument. Once again if you cut it either
horizontally or vertically you would have the
same things on both sides making it
balanced.
6. SUMMERY:
These monuments have differences as
well as similarities. The Roman
Colosseum was made from different
materials then the Nassau Veterans
Memorial Coliseum due to what they
had access to at the time and the
advancements we have now. We see
similarities when we compare
elements of design such as, repetition,
texture, emphasis and balance.
Although they are from two totally
different time periods, we can
compare the two together because
the Roman Colosseum has aspects
that the modern coliseum has taken to
build a very efficient sporting arena
for their fans to enjoy!
