vigorouslypursuinganeffectiveCityDeal
forlargescaleinvestmentinthecity.
ForthesesamereasonstheCityCouncil
hasbeenactiveinrenewablesformore
than15years. Wehavelongrecognised
howthisexcitingnewgrowthareawould
addtoourexistingindustrialbaseandbea
keycontributortobuildinga21stCentury
sustainableenergyindustry.
Ourenergyindustryiscriticaltothe
sustainabilityofoureconomy,ourquality
oflifeandopportunityforourcitizens.
Aberdeen’senergyskillsaretransferable
andtheriseofnewrenewabletechnologies
offershugeopportunitiesbothathomeand
overseas.
Inthepast15
yearswehave
seenencouraging
progress.
AberdeenCity
andShireisnowthelargestemployerin
offshorewindinScotlandbysomemargin.
Thisisasignificantachievementandonewe
canbeproudof. Notonlyareourcompanies
andorganisationsmakinginroadsinto
offshoremarketsbutalsointodiversefields
suchasbio-energy,heat,solar,biomass
andelectricitystorage. Inaddition,weare
makingAberdeenanattractivelocation
forpioneeringenergyprojects–theCity
Council’sownH2hydrogenprojectsand
theEuropeanOffshoreWindDeployment
CentreinwhichAREGisajointventure
partnerbeingthemostprominent.
Howevertherearestillchallengeswiththe
developmentandintegrationofrenewables
andthesemustnotbeunderestimated. Iam
convincedthatourenergyindustrycanplay
avitalroleinaddressingandovercoming
thechallengesbyapplyingtheinnovations
andsolutionsinwhichourpeoplearesowell
versedandforwhichAberdeenisglobally
renowned.

2015
Vattenfall,andAMECWindEnergythecompanyitacquiredin2008,hasworked
closelywithAREGthroughthedevelopmentoftheEuropeanOffshoreWind
DeploymentCentre. Thewindprojecthasalongandcolourfulhistoryandthrough
ourcollaborationwefeelwehaveforgedastrongrelationship.AREGhasworked
tirelesslyonbehalfoftheNorthEastanditcantakeenormouscreditforthe
growthofsustainableenergyintheregionandthepathithasclearedfortheregion
tocapturefurtherinvestment.

In 2014 – 2015 we promoted your
interests by exhibiting, networking and
distributing membership directories
at All-Energy, Scottish Renewables
Annual Conference also Marine and
Offshore Wind conferences. In addition
we welcomed over 150 delegates to
our international trade reception in
May, played a prominent role in All-
Energy 2014 business breakfast and the
Scottish Green Energy Awards. At all
these events we experienced a buoyant
interest in our membership and the
capabilities of our network of contacts.
Alsoin2014,forthefirsttimeRenewable
UK,AREGandAberdeenCityCouncil
hostedabusinessreceptionforthe
ScottishRenewablesOffshoreWind
conference. 100peopleattendedan
animatedeveningandexchangeofnews,
viewsandcontacts. Intotal,thisprovided
potentialexposureforAREGandits
memberstoover10,000delegates,allwith
akeeninterestinrenewableenergy.
Weshallbecontinuingtheseactivitiesin
2015–2016andarescheduledtoattend
thefollowingconferences:

In2014-2015Aberdeenhascontinued
todevelopandconsolidateitsposition
asagloballycompetitiveenergycapital
intermsofsupplychainandUKand
internationalmarkets. Alsoin2014full
consentwasawardedfortheEuropean
OffshoreWindDeploymentCentre
(EOWDC),aprojectthatwillbevery
importantfordeliveringgovernment
andindustryambitionsforoffshore
wind. WealsorecentlysawEurope’s
largestfleetofhydrogenbusesappear
onAberdeen’sstreets.
Iamawarethatmanyofyou-our
members-arefacingparticular
challengesasyouendeavourtowin
renewableenergybusiness. Arecent
challengehasbeenthedeclinein
industrycertaintyregardingsupport
mechanismshoweversomeofthe
challengesarethesameastheyhave
alwaysbeen. Theseincludeconsenting
anddevelopmenttimescales,
improvingengineeringandtechnology
solutions,financeandgridaccess
andconnections. Iftherenewable
energytechnologiesaretoprosper
thesechallengesstillneedtobe
addressedandthatwillrequireaction
byallinterestedparties:government,
regulators,industry,technology
developersandfinanciers.
InthiscontextAREGwillcontinueto
playitspartbyinformingandpromoting
ourmembershipandbycontinuing
ourlobbying,intervention,influence
andcommunicationactivities. We
willalsocontinuetoworkcloselywith
AberdeenCityCounciltodevelopnew
eventstailoredtoourmembers’very
broadspectrumofneeds,specialities
andinterests. Theseeventswill
featurethebestmarketintelligence
andinformationavailable,highlighting
diversificationopportunitiesand
assistingmemberstoforgenew
relationshipsandexplorenewmarkets
anddevelopmentopportunities.

AREGcontinuetopressahead
withthisstrategicallyimportant
scheme,whichhasthepotentialto
puttheNorth-EastofScotlandatthe
forefrontofoneoftheworld’sfastest
growingenergysectors.
Thewindfarmwillbeatest-bedfornew
technology,installation,operations
andmaintenancetechniquesforthe
deploymentofoffshorewind. Thiswill
cutthecostofdeployment,speedup
offshorewinddevelopment–andbring
investmentofupto£230millionintolocal
greengeneratingcapacity. Theproject
hasalsobeenawardedaEuropeangrant
of40millioneurosinrecognitionofits
significancefortheEuropeanoffshore
windindustry,andoffersthisregion
theopportunitytosecureashareina
marketwhichcouldbeworthmorethan
£100billionoverthenext20years.
In2014,theschemewasgrantedamarine
licenceandplanningconsentforthe
onshoresubstationandexportcabling.
Togetherwiththe2013consentfromthe
ScottishGovernmentunderSection36
oftheElectricityAct,theprojectbecame
fullyconsentedforconstruction.
Alsoin2014ajudicialreviewinstigatedby
theTrumpOrganisationwasdismissed
bytheCourtofSessioninEdinburgh;
anappeal,however,wassubsequently
brought. Theresultofthiswasannounced
inJuneandthatwasthedismissalofall
thegroundsofappeal.AndyPaine,project
directorforEOWDCandheadofoffshore
winddevelopmentintheUK,said:‘Weare
delightedthattheScottishCourtshave
yetagainsupportedtheEOWDC,amuch
neededinvestmentinScotland’sandthe
NorthEast’senergyinfrastructure.
ThedecisionbytheScottishCourts
bringscloseratechnologically-advanced
offshorewindsectorsupportinga
sustainableandsecureenergysupplyat
lowercost.TheEOWDCwillalsoprove
tobeanintegral,flagshipprojectfor
AberdeenCityandShire’senterprising
Energeticainitiative,positioningthe
regionasarenewablesleader.’
Anappealhearingregardingtheonshore
planningpermissionforthesubstation
andcableroutebroughtbytheresidents
ofBlackdogwasalsorejectedinJune.
Meanwhile,theprojectpartnerscontinue
toengagewithinvestorstoadvancethe
schemewhilethelegalchallengesarein
progress. Discussionsareencouraging
andsubstantivetalksshouldstartwhen
thelegalprocessisconcluded.
AberdeenCityandShirehasaunique
advantageinbeingabletocapitaliseon
itsworld-classupstreamoffshoreoiland
gassupplychain.Manyofourbusinesses
arediversifyingtheirexpertise,whichis
directlyapplicabletooffshorerenewables
andwhichwillcontributesignificantlyto
thisregion’sfutureprosperity.

whichtheNorth-Eastcannotaffordto
missandprojectpartnerswouldliketo

Howevertherearestillchallengeswiththe developmentandintegrationofrenewables andthesemustnotbeunderestimated. Iam convincedthatourenergyindustrycanplay avitalroleinaddressingandovercoming thechallengesbyapplyingtheinnovations andsolutionsinwhichourpeoplearesowell versedandforwhichAberdeenisglobally renowned. NEW FOR 2015 Vattenfall,andAMECWindEnergythecompanyitacquiredin2008,hasworked closelywithAREGthroughthedevelopmentoftheEuropeanOffshoreWind DeploymentCentre. Thewindprojecthasalongandcolourfulhistoryandthrough ourcollaborationwefeelwehaveforgedastrongrelationship.AREGhasworked tirelesslyonbehalfoftheNorthEastanditcantakeenormouscreditforthe growthofsustainableenergyintheregionandthepathithasclearedfortheregion tocapturefurtherinvestment. In 2014 – 2015 we promoted your interests by exhibiting, networking and distributing membership directories at All-Energy, Scottish Renewables Annual Conference also Marine and Offshore Wind conferences. In addition we welcomed over 150 delegates to our international trade reception in May, played a prominent role in All- Energy 2014 business breakfast and the Scottish Green Energy Awards. At all these events we experienced a buoyant interest in our membership and the capabilities of our network of contacts. Alsoin2014,forthefirsttimeRenewable UK,AREGandAberdeenCityCouncil hostedabusinessreceptionforthe ScottishRenewablesOffshoreWind conference. 100peopleattendedan animatedeveningandexchangeofnews, viewsandcontacts. Intotal,thisprovided potentialexposureforAREGandits memberstoover10,000delegates,allwith akeeninterestinrenewableenergy. Weshallbecontinuingtheseactivitiesin 2015–2016andarescheduledtoattend thefollowingconferences: PROMOTING OUR MEMBERS JeanMorrison,ChairofAREG AREGlooksforwardtoanotheryear intherenewablesindustrywith customaryenthusiasm.Aswithevery otheryearweareawarethattherewill beopportunitiesandsuccessesbut alsochallengesandrisks. WealsorecentlysawEurope’s largestfleetofhydrogenbusesappear onAberdeen’sstreets. Iamawarethatmanyofyou-our members-arefacingparticular challengesasyouendeavourtowin renewableenergybusiness. Arecent challengehasbeenthedeclinein industrycertaintyregardingsupport mechanismshoweversomeofthe challengesarethesameastheyhave alwaysbeen. Theseincludeconsenting anddevelopmenttimescales, improvingengineeringandtechnology solutions,financeandgridaccess andconnections. Iftherenewable energytechnologiesaretoprosper thesechallengesstillneedtobe addressedandthatwillrequireaction byallinterestedparties:government, regulators,industry,technology developersandfinanciers. ProjectpartnersVattenfalland AREGcontinuetopressahead withthisstrategicallyimportant scheme,whichhasthepotentialto puttheNorth-EastofScotlandatthe forefrontofoneoftheworld’sfastest growingenergysectors. Thewindfarmwillbeatest-bedfornew technology,installation,operations andmaintenancetechniquesforthe deploymentofoffshorewind. Thiswill cutthecostofdeployment,speedup offshorewinddevelopment–andbring investmentofupto£230millionintolocal greengeneratingcapacity. Theproject hasalsobeenawardedaEuropeangrant of40millioneurosinrecognitionofits significancefortheEuropeanoffshore windindustry,andoffersthisregion theopportunitytosecureashareina marketwhichcouldbeworthmorethan £100billionoverthenext20years. In2014,theschemewasgrantedamarine licenceandplanningconsentforthe onshoresubstationandexportcabling. Togetherwiththe2013consentfromthe ScottishGovernmentunderSection36 oftheElectricityAct,theprojectbecame fullyconsentedforconstruction. Alsoin2014ajudicialreviewinstigatedby theTrumpOrganisationwasdismissed bytheCourtofSessioninEdinburgh; anappeal,however,wassubsequently brought. Theresultofthiswasannounced inJuneandthatwasthedismissalofall thegroundsofappeal.AndyPaine,project directorforEOWDCandheadofoffshore winddevelopmentintheUK,said:‘Weare delightedthattheScottishCourtshave yetagainsupportedtheEOWDC,amuch neededinvestmentinScotland’sandthe NorthEast’senergyinfrastructure. ThedecisionbytheScottishCourts bringscloseratechnologically-advanced offshorewindsectorsupportinga sustainableandsecureenergysupplyat lowercost.TheEOWDCwillalsoprove tobeanintegral,flagshipprojectfor AberdeenCityandShire’senterprising Energeticainitiative,positioningthe regionasarenewablesleader.’ Anappealhearingregardingtheonshore planningpermissionforthesubstation andcableroutebroughtbytheresidents ofBlackdogwasalsorejectedinJune.
