This document provides a guide for clients undertaking primary school building projects. It emphasizes the importance of good design in creating facilities that promote learning and raise educational standards. Research shows test scores and staff retention can be up to 11% higher in well-designed buildings. The guide outlines key factors in achieving good design, such as developing a clear vision, thorough brief, and skilled design team. It also presents case studies of successful school projects and a checklist of characteristics of well-designed primary schools, including inspiring design, sustainability, and flexible, well-proportioned spaces. The overall aim is to empower and inform school communities to achieve the best outcomes from capital investment projects.
The author argues that while the term "transformation" is used frequently in discussions of Building Schools for the Future (BSF), there is little clarity around what exactly it means and how it can be achieved. Current education standards and metrics may restrict truly transformative changes. To truly transform education, learners must be actively involved in co-designing new schools and learning experiences through BSF, rather than having changes imposed on them from above. Embedding learner voice through meaningful participation could help design learning spaces that support innovative theories of learning and prepare students for the 21st century.

Through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) program, the UK aims to rebuild and invest in school facilities. However, engaging stakeholders in the design process risks overburdening schools and distracting from education, while limited consultation risks narrow views. There is also no exemplar for 21st century school design. Therefore, engagement is still needed to innovate, but how can schools be effectively involved without being overburdened? One solution is providing additional resources during the transformation, but funding has not been provided. An alternative is delegating design to experts, but this risks lack of involvement. More research is still needed to determine the best approach.

A Study of Project-Based Learning in Dubai's Middle Schools.moeenali5423
Project-based learning (PBL) has been embraced in Dubai's middle schools as it engages students in hands-on projects that foster skills like creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Dubai educators have worked to carefully integrate PBL into the curriculum through teacher training, technology resources, and community partnerships. Examples of successful PBL projects in Dubai middle schools include initiatives focused on sustainability, social issues, and cultural exchange. While implementation presents challenges around assessment and time management, Dubai supports its schools to ensure PBL continues developing lifelong learners.
The document provides an overview of evolving learning space typologies in education, workplaces and other emerging contexts. It discusses three key areas:
1) Educational spaces - Examines how educational institutions are facilitating learning through new pedagogical approaches like project-based learning, rescheduling learning periods, and widening teaching methods. Case studies of innovative schools are provided.
2) Workspaces - Explores how workplaces are designing learning spaces to support continual learning, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Examples of co-working spaces that foster learning among solopreneurs and startups are discussed.
3) Emerging contexts - Briefly mentions unconventional learning spaces emerging outside of traditional institutions, like makers
This document provides guidance for those involved in designing and building new schools. It discusses three key phases of the school building process:
1. Developing an educational vision - Defining the pedagogical needs and requirements of the school community. Special consideration should be given to understanding local context and future flexibility.
2. Design and construction - Translating the educational vision into a physical school building. Effective communication between the school and architects is essential.
3. Occupation - Using and adapting the new school building. Post-occupancy evaluations can provide lessons for future projects.
The guidance includes case studies of different school projects and key lessons learned at each phase of the process. The goal is to help
Lewis & Hickey is an architecture firm with over 100 years of experience in project design and implementation. They operate out of seven international offices and work across various sectors, including student living. The document discusses their holistic approach to design, understanding client needs, optimizing performance, knowledge of the student housing market, and trusted project delivery.
The BIF Student Experience Lab was created to center the student experience in efforts to transform education. Through research involving thousands of data points from students at over 40 schools, the Lab identified nine themes that impact student success. The themes are explored through visualizations of video, audio and narrative to illuminate the human and systems factors influencing the student experience. The Lab aims to enable experimentation of new solutions by collaborators from various sectors to directly enhance the student experience through its real-world platform.
The PDS Cluster Project from 2006-2007 involved 4 infant schools and 2 higher education institutions working together to promote effective practice for trainees placed in pairs. The project aimed to produce guidance materials like a training DVD and handbook to support mentors and encourage schools to host paired placements. Each participating school used the project to address its own development goals related to mentoring trainees or curriculum areas. The project's expectations were that schools and universities would find paired placements more easily and that mentors, trainees, and pupils would benefit from the collaborative experience.
The document summarizes the work of the Service Transformation Work Stream (STWS) which aimed to transform educational services in Croydon, UK prior to capital investment projects. The STWS engaged schools through a Lead Advocate in each school and worked to broaden horizons, critically examine practices, develop educational visions, and build capacity for change. Key activities included immersion days, provocation papers, workshops to develop school strategies, visits to examples of next practices, and community involvement programs. The goal was to ensure new facilities supported improved educational experiences and transformed mindsets around new ways of working.
The Flexible Learning Institute (FLI) aims to promote excellence and innovation in blended and flexible learning through three main objectives: leading innovative practices, promoting good practice, and initiating research. The FLI will achieve this through seven initiatives including developing standards, guidelines, professional development programs, and research. The standards aim to establish a framework for continuous quality improvement and leadership in flexible learning nationally.
Project DEgree is an evidence-based approach to developmental education reform that aims to improve success rates of students requiring remediation. It provides comprehensive support through practices such as intrusive advising, learning communities, and accelerated curriculum. Project DEgree has proven success based on evaluations of nine pilot colleges. It works with colleges to tailor supports and provides training, resources, and a national network to assist with implementation and scaling of effective practices. The goal is to engage, support, and accelerate students to graduation through holistic and integrated academic and student support.
The document summarizes EdisonLearning, an education organization that provides whole-school solutions and services to improve student achievement. It was founded nearly 20 years ago based on a philosophy of creating an innovative learning environment through a holistic approach. EdisonLearning has since expanded its offerings and services, including school designs, achievement services, extended education, and online learning solutions. It focuses on a research-based approach called the Four Cornerstones - recruiting top talent, demanding content and customized instruction, fostering a positive culture, and data-driven management. The organization strives to partner with schools to help every student succeed through its comprehensive and collaborative approach.
The document summarizes the process that Grey Lynn School in Auckland, New Zealand underwent to transition to a new learning environment that aligns with the country's policies around innovative learning environments (ILEs). The school worked with an organization called PLSiP to [1] analyze its vision and practices, [2] identify how to enhance the new collaborative spaces to better support the vision, and [3] test an organizational model for the new spaces. This included workshops to translate the school's vision into specific learning behaviors and activities to inform interior design changes. The process helped the school staff define needed activity spaces and develop a change strategy to transition effectively into the new learning environment.
Alan fletcher presentation online 3 from csalgrhythm
This document summarizes a presentation on sustaining English language teaching projects overseas through communities of practice (CoPs). It discusses that effective continuing professional development (CPD) through CoPs can improve teacher pedagogy, learning outcomes, and ultimately project sustainability. While CoPs have benefits according to literature, practical challenges include managing teacher resistance to change and restrictive local cultures. The presentation proposes implementing CoPs online to connect dispersed teachers, and utilizing strategies like the IDEAS model to address resistance through communication and participation. It also provides examples of online collaborative activities and discusses considering management issues, a SWOT analysis, and an implementation schedule to successfully establish CoPs.
1. architects4education
An unprecedented programme of investment is
transforming education buildings in the UK. The
goal is to provide flexible, high quality facilities that
support changing styles of teaching and learning.
Good design is at the heart of this agenda.
Architects4education is an established consortium
of award-winning practices, including John Lyall
Architects, Greenhill Jenner Architects, Stanley
Bragg Architects and Chris French Architecture
and Research. Our considerable track record in
the education sector is matched by our creative
flair and commitment to designing exciting and
sustainable learning environments.
Whether the client is an individual school
community or a large consortium, the key to a
successful project is good communication. We
work on schemes of all sizes, and our practical,
client-focussed approach can be adapted to suit
a range of projects and procurement routes. With
a team of 100 architects, we have the resources
to deliver complex, large-scale projects within the
most challenging timescales.
‘It was a real pleasure working with architects4education. They are
incredibly insightful and ultimately inspiring. The plans they drew
up for us were phenomenal. I recommend their services’’

2. architects4education
Early years
Pen Green Centre - Greenhill Jenner Early years learning environments have been transformed recently.
Welcoming and domestic in scale, Sure Start facilities, children’s centres
and nurseries are now designed to engage with the whole family, not just
the child. With over 20 years experience in this field, we understand the
importance of good design in providing attractive and effective learning
environments for pre-school children.
Primary
Today’s child-centred primary schools require a fluid range of teaching
and learning facilities. Classrooms are often supported by breakout areas,
providing flexible space for individual and small group work.
The government is set to make a huge investment in primary school
buildings through its primary schools programme. In most cases, the funding
will be used to extend or remodel existing buildings to bring them up to 21st
Market Field Special School - John Lyall century standards.
Working directly with individual schools and as framework partners with
LEAs, we have been involved in a variety of primary school projects. These
range from small building extensions to completely new two-form-entry
schools. We have the experience to make limited funding go a long way and
to create inspiring learning environments for the whole school community.
Special educational needs
This is a particularly challenging field, which requires expertise and empathy.
We have designed new schools and extensions to existing facilities, including
a number of listed buildings. As part of a BSF programme, we have also
developed options for new model special schools co-located on secondary
school sites.
Harmood Centre - Greenhill Jenner
3. Moulsham High School - Stanley Bragg
Secondary
There is an increasing demand, stimulated by the BSF programme, for
imaginative secondary school buildings that reflect changing methods of
teaching and learning. Providing these enhanced learning environments may
involve extending or remodelling existing buildings or replacing them with
brand new schools. We have designed many new secondary school buildings
and have developed master plans and feasibility studies for new school sites.
Having worked with several bidding consortiums, architects4education has
a detailed understanding of the ambitious aims of BSF: to create school
buildings that are flexible, adaptable and inspiring as well as offering good
value for money.
Braintree Sixth Form Centre - Stanley Bragg We appreciate the pressures of the BSF bidding process and can deliver
design information within the tight timescales involved. We also recognise
the importance of good team coordination, especially on multi-site projects.
To ensure consistency and quality, we offer all clients a free design review
service led by our design steering group.
Further and higher education
Our experience in the further and higher education sector includes university
faculty buildings as well as a sixth form centre and a variety of training
facilities.
Community and regeneration
The government wants to link investment in new school buildings to broader
regeneration initiatives, using joined-up funding streams. Providing lifelong
learning facilities, advice, support and childcare, these schemes are intended
to tackle social exclusion by helping people into work and training.
With our experience in housing, commercial and healthcare projects, we
have the expertise to maximise the role of schools in local regeneration
programmes.
Sustainability
Sustainable schools are an inspiring example to the next generation.
Architects4education designs buildings using reliable and cost effective
technologies to minimise operating costs as well as protecting the earth’s
resources. As a minimum, we aim to meet or exceed a BREEAM rating of
very good, and we are working towards effective and affordable designs for
carbon neutral schools.
Harmony Centre - Greenhill Jenner
