Female African artists have traditionally created art for spiritual purposes using mediums like rock art, metal sculptures, and textiles. However, limited record keeping in Africa means information about female artists is scarce. Today, African art is used not only for spiritual beliefs but also for storytelling, decoration, politics, and awareness. Despite changes, the number of female artists in sub-Saharan Africa remains low with only a few given opportunities for large audiences. An indirect self-portrait is a portrait that represents the artist through objects that have special meaning to them rather than directly depicting their image. The document discusses how artists like Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh, and Picasso created indirect self-portraits using personal objects, body parts, or reflections. It provides examples of modern indirect self-portraits made by students using objects that represent their interests like writing, music, travel, and childhood toys. The document encourages readers to make their own list of objects that represent who they are and could be included in their own indirect self-portrait.
Mary Wigman was a pioneering German dancer, teacher, and choreographer in the early 20th century. She developed Ausdruckstanz, a style of expressionist modern dance that used movement to express inner emotions and experiences. Her 1926 solo work Hexentanz is considered a signature work that demonstrated her fully matured artistic identity. Through this piece, Wigman was able to realize her desire for metamorphosis and transformation through dance.

Warli art is a folk art tradition of the tribal communities in Maharashtra, India. It is traditionally created by tribal women on the mud walls of their homes. The paintings depict scenes from daily life and rituals, without any mythological figures. Common motifs include human figures, animals, and activities like dancing, hunting, and farming. The style has simple rhythmic patterns executed in white paint on a red background. While the tribes were traditionally forest dwellers, many have now integrated into mainstream society and the commercialization of Warli art has helped improve their economic conditions.

Ancient Landscape painting developed significantly over Chinese dynastic periods. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, landscape painting rose in prominence. The Sui and Tang dynasties saw green become the dominant color and new techniques developed. The Five Dynasties period formed the North and South schools of ink painting, represented by different monks. Landscape painting continued to evolve and mature during later dynasties like Yuan, Ming, and Qing.
Surrealism sought to channel the unconscious through fantastic imagery to unlock the power of imagination. Arab Feminist Art’s
1. Facebook Project
This is a series of screen prints that
explore Saudi Arabian women’s lives. I
completed two 30-by-36-inch prints.
The title was inspired by my niece’s
Facebook page post that encouraged
women in Saudi Arabia to drive on a
certain day as a protest. Although the
protest did not happen, the campaign
went viral.

2. Mihrab
Saudi-born artist Hend Al Mansour has long
explored themes related to Arab female equality
and the expression of women as full participants
in contemporary society. Her newest project,
Mihrab, is her most ambitious and
comprehensive artistic endeavor yet, wherein
she reveals private female spiritual practice as
separate from male-dominated religious
parameters.
For more details: http://www.hendalmansour.com/
3. Biography
Since early age Hend Al-Mansour pursued a passion for art. As a child she carved images of
women into sand, filled many sketchbooks with her drawings, and was known as an artist by
her peers. Yet she was acutely aware of her limitations in terms of freedom and status as a
Saudi Arabian woman.

4. The Secret
In a background of checkered
pattern of Saudi men’s
headdress, two women smile
at us under a flowery curtain.
From their hands flows a swirl
of pink henna pattern within
gold background. Celebrating
beauty is their way to defy
oppression.

5. Mandala Arabica
This is a verse from the
“Book of Women” in the
Quran. My visual
interpretation of this verse is
to celebrate what the
feminine might mean in
Islam. The verse is depicted
without dots, i.e. not easily
readable, so to mirror the
vague statement of the
verse.
