Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born in 1931 in Rameswaram, India. He studied physics and aerospace engineering, and had a distinguished career working for the Defense Research and Development Organization and the Indian Space Research Organization. As project director for India's Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), Kalam played a key role in developing the technology for India to launch satellites. The SLV project launched India's first satellite in 1979 and helped form the basis for future satellite launch vehicles.
