Life Member - Ric Charlesworth
Life Membership is the most prestigious award that the Western Australian Hockey Association can bestow upon an individual. It is in
recognition of a person’s outstanding contribution to the sport of hockey either as a player, coach and/or administrator over a prolonged period
of time.
At the Annual Hockey WA Awards Night Dinner on 31st October 2014; Hockey WA had the privilege of presenting Dr. Richard Charlesworth AM
Life Membership of the Western Australian Hockey Association (Inc.)
Dr Richard Charlesworth’s contribution to the sport of hockey now spans five decades with his representation at state and national competi-
tion commencing in 1971. His dedication and competitiveness on the playing field was legendary both for Australia and for Western Australia,
indeed it has been said that the WA sides of the mid 70’s through to the mid 80’s were consistently the most dominate in the history of the
National Championships.
Ric’s contribution as a coach both with the Hockeyroos and more recently with the Kookaburras has resulted in his reputation as a Master
Coach and has lead to the Hockeyroos, whilst under his control, being widely considered the best and most consistent international team that
this country has ever produced across all sports.
His work with the Kookaburras culminated in the recent World Cup success. Again, this enhanced his reputation as a Master Coach. The
complete dominance of the Kookaburras over this tournament stunned the world hockey community and has lifted the bar to a new standard.
The Kookaburras fast, aggressive, high scoring style of play has elevated the sport as a spectacle at a time when considerable pressure is
mounting on the promotion of the sport (particularly for broadcasting). This was a god send.
Ric’s has always viewed the sport with a critical eye, and as with his coaching has been an innovator and advocate for change and improvement
within the sport. This is evidenced by the successful Super 9’s concept and tournament held over recent times in Perth.
Ric’s retirement from the international coaching arena has lead to this
award tonight, however Ric is not lost to the Hockey community of
WA as he has accepted the role as a mentor coach for a number
of our junior state team coaches, so imagine the impact of having
this Master Coach mentor these aspiring coaches and players.
Finally, join with us in the recognition and celebration of the
contribution Dr Richard Charlesworth has made, as he is
inducted as a Life Member of the Western Australian
Hockey Association.

• Became the 204th male to represent WA at senior level hockey.
• 7 August 1972: International hockey debut in a 0-0 draw with New Zealand in the opening match of the Munich

• October 1988: 227 hockey appearances for Australia before retiring from international hockey following 2-1 defeat in
the Olympic Games bronze medal match.

Life Membership is the highest honour that the Association can
bestow upon an Individual. The following people have received
Life Membership of the Association for services to hockey in
Western Australia.

service to hockey in Western Australia.

The following have been recognised by Hockey Australia for
service to hockey in Western Australia and Australia by an
Award of Merit

President
2014 was my first complete year as
President of Hockey WA and like every
year it presented its fair share of
challenges; However I believe this was far
outweighed by the opportunities that
the year gone has provided our sport.
Before I move onto developments in Western Australia, I want to
acknowledge the performances of the national teams in 2014 who
delivered a new standard of hockey at the World Cup and
Commonwealth Games, providing exceptional results, but just as
importantly, taking the sport of hockey to exciting new levels. The
televising of these and other events was a positive outcome and
now the challenge lies with hockey as a sport in Australia to
leverage off this and take our sport to new levels.
Hockey WA is focussed on engaging with and supporting Hockey
Australia with this challenge to leverage off what I see as a unique
opportunity to take the sport forward in an increasingly
competitive environment.
Underpinning this forward direction, Hockey WA is finalising an
updated strategic plan which will be rolled out in the coming
months. The strategic plan will continue to focus on the same (or
similar) pillars of “organisation”, “revenue”, “high performance”,
“participation” and “facilities”. However, the structure will provide
a greater focus on the individual stakeholders groups associated
with Hockey WA and will be linked to improved structures to deliver
initiatives and tie these with Hockey WA management
performance.
In parallel, the organisational structure is being realigned to the
strategic plan, and importantly better aligns managers’ focus on
members and all our stakeholders.
As I look back on 2014, I would like to draw your attention to these
strategic pillars and some of the positive outcomes achieved during
this period;
Organisation
A key role of the Board is to provide governance over our
Association. Through 2014 this focus continued to be a focus for
the Board as we look to improve the overarching governance of
the activities of Hockey WA and provide platforms to support the
governance activities of our members and key stakeholders.
In 2014 the Board of Hockey WA announced and commenced the
roll-out of a far broader reward and recognition program which will
provide a platform to acknowledge the exceptional contribution of
key individuals across our Association.
Hockey WA is committed to recognising and rewarding, in a timely
manner, the many contributors to our sport who play an integral
part in the success of every player, club, official and ultimately
the association as a whole. Without these contributors, many of
whom are providing their services voluntarily; our sport would
not be what it is today. I am very proud to be part of this initiative
and look forward to working with the wider hockey community to
identify and recognising these contributors.
As an extension of this initiative, the 2014 Hockey WA Annual
dinner agenda was expanded to recognise the wider hockey

community while continuing to celebrate our elite competition and
players. For the first time we awarded the winning clubs with the
association based trophies and I congratulate the Peel Rebels
Hockey Club on winning the Kyle Rutter (highest percentage of
points in the season by a junior club) and University Associates
(Womens) Hockey Club on winning the Byrne & Judge (highest
percentage points in the season by a senior club) trophies.
Also at the Annual Dinner, Dr Richard Charlesworth, a true visionary
of our sport was awarded with Hockey WA Life Membership, the
highest recognition that the Association can bestow upon any
individual. Ric’s considerable achievements are outlined in a
separate article in the annual report.
Revenue
As reported last year, over the last 6 years, the financial
performance of Hockey WA and ongoing sustainability has been a
key concern and area requiring immediate addressing. I am very
pleased to advise that the association has continued to improve our
annual financial performance in 2014 delivering improved results
and continuing to generate positive cash flow after replacing both
turfs at the Perth Hockey stadium.
There remain challenges ahead of the Association to maintain
this position; However there are also some great opportunities
which can now be further explored on the back of this continued
improved annual position.
High Performance
In 2014 the Melville Toyota league provided one of the most
competitive and exciting seasons to date. The competition was
again tight throughout the season; culminating in a tense grand
final day which, witnessed by more than 3500 spectators, resulted
in four consecutive games going to overtime.
I would like congratulate all the Melville Toyota League teams on
delivering this exceptional competition and in particularly UWA and
YMCC on their 2014 premierships seasons.
At the Australian Hockey League (AHL), Hockey WA improved our
overall performances with a significantly improved result for the
Thundersticks, falling just short of the championship gold, and the
strong showing from a young Diamonds team in what was a very
tight competition.
Looking to the future, Hockey WA embedded two development
programs, TAP and HEAT, which are providing improved pathways
for our talented young athletes into elite competition. These
programs are being recognised for their high quality outcomes and
we look forward to seeing these young athletes stepping up in our
local competitions and representing their state and country in years
to come.
Participation
One of the great strengths of hockey is the ability for a great
breadth of players to participate. From seven to seventy (and
beyond) hockey is one of the few team sports to support such a
breadth of engagement. This breadth is pivotal to the past and
future success of our sport and something we must continue to
support, foster and celebrate.
In 2014 Hockey WA continued to increase player participation,
a trend not universally achieved across Australia. Continuing to
invest in our participation and importantly our player retention is
critical for our ongoing success and while the sport has continued
to grow overall numbers. However, the rate of growth is declining

In reviewing the year 2014, I will focus on
a number of highlights from the year, a
number of challenges and finally a
number of initiatives implemented over
the year. Following my contribution will
be an outline from each manager on their
area of operations.
Highlights
Undoubtedly the highlight for HWA this year was the staging of
the Grand Final Day with in excess of 3,500 spectators who created
an outstanding atmosphere and showcased Hockey in WA at its
best. The format of playing the Melville Toyota League finals on the
Saturday with all other finals being completed the week prior is
certainly providing dividends in attendance at our season finale.
The calibre of hockey in all matches that day was of the highest
quality and congratulations to University of WA as winners in the
Women’s and YMCC as repeat winners in the Men’s both terrific
matches, both going to extra time and the goal from one Jamie
Dwyer to win the men’s match and close the season was
extraordinary.
and is not keeping up with population growth, a trend which we
will be focussing on overturning through 2015 and beyond.
Facilities
Firstly, I would like to congratulate UWA Hockey Club on the
completion of their second turf and Whitfords Hockey Club on
successful approval of their facilities, expected to be completed
in 2016. In addition in 2014, Hockey WA delivered new surfaces
at both PHS1 and PHS2 while Melville City Hockey Club and Hale
Hockey Club resurfaced their existing surfaces.
Despite this significant activity, the availability of synthetic
playing facilities in WA continues to be a major inhibitor for our
sports growth and focus for the strategic plan being developed. Put
simply, we need a step change in the quality and quantity of playing
surfaces to support our ongoing growth. This will remain a key area
of development in 2015, albeit there is a long way to progress on
this front. Hockey WA has commenced some exciting discussions
with DSR and is increasingly looking to improve the support we
can provide to clubs in the overall development of facilities for the
wider Association.
Finally, I would like to close by thanking all our sponsors,
supporters, members, officials and volunteers. There are many
thousands of contributors to our great sport and everyone plays a
key role in delivering our past and continued success. In particular
I would like to thank the Board of Hockey WA, Peter Churack and
his team for their continued passion, significant contribution and
commitment to our sport.
As I look forward beyond 2015 then I have to say I am excited at the
opportunity that lies ahead and look forward to continuing to work
with everyone in delivering this future. In the immediate term
I trust everyone will enjoy a safe and exceptional 2015 with the
Hockey WA community.

Large crowds were also in attendance at a number of internationals
held at the Perth Hockey Stadium over the year starting off with the
Test match against New Zealand on Easter Thursday and
finishing with the great support seen for the India test match
series in November. Both these events provided additional proof to
Hockey Australia that Perth is a city that will support International
Hockey and while the National teams are located here and other
states moan about the lack of internationals in their states, it is still
Perth that provides the best value and the best crowds with the
best venue in Australia for such events.
The venue at Perth Hockey Stadium was enhanced over the year
with both the pitches being resurfaced and in the case of PHS2, the
underlay and bitumen being also removed, laser levelled and
relayed, now making both pitches of international standard. The
relay of one surface is a large task but to double the task with one
after the other was great effort and special mention must go to
Gerrit Englebrecht (Senior Manager – Facilities & Infrastructure) for
ensuring such a smooth transition. Additional Hockey WA was
asked to provide assistance to Hale Hockey in the relay and
reconditioning of their turf, which was provided. This did create
some inconvenience at the commencement of the season but the
end result and the standard of that surface, and with the relay at
Melville, means better surfaces equate to better hockey and a
stronger competition. UWA also completed the installation of their
second pitch and although completed, it was not utilised during the
season. Its completion will relieve the pressure on facilities and will
allow for better fixturing at more sociable hours.
The performance of our state teams also improved in 2014 with the
Thundersticks narrowly missing gold in a shoot-out with Tasmania,
many have said that it was the outstanding performance of WA’s
own Tristram Clements in goal in that match that made the
difference. Improved performances in our U18’s & U21’s
illustrate that the greater focus given by the association in this area
of operations is paying dividends. The identification of the need
for a more formal and structured development program in 2013
and the implementation of an embryo program in the offseason
of 2013/14 has also enhanced the state team performances and
the now extended version in 2014/15 of TAP and HEAT programs is
expected to produce even better prepared athletes for this year’s
U18, U21 and AHL championships.
The next phase of these development programs is their integration
into the WAIS and HA high performance pathways and considerable
progress has been made over the offseason with combined WAIS
and HEAT teams competing against the Hockeyroos, Melville Toyota
League club sides, and in a number of cases visiting international
teams. Also, combined WAIS, HEAT and AHL development squads
toured Singapore and Malaysia over the Easter break providing
exceptional opportunities for our young developing and emerging
athletes to get a taste of international hockey within our region.
Challenges
Sustainability of the sport is the largest issue for hockey in WA.
While numbers continue to grow in WA (which has been unique
within Australia apart from Tasmania) caution is required. Much of
this growth has been in Masters hockey and while it is
excellent that players are staying in the sport and that many
women are returning to the sport, the lack of growth within our
entry level J5/6 competition is concerning. Additionally, as the
current crop of players move through the senior grades and look to
playing Masters, many have only ever played on Turf and the
prospect of playing on grass may mean a reduction in Masters
growth.

In essence the lack of turf facilities and the lack of engagement
with Hockey WA and clubs with schools, parents and other groups
within our community to promote hockey as the sport of choice are
our biggest challenges. This is even more evident in our regional
areas where associations have few resources and many logistical
issues to overcome
Initiatives
To this end Hockey WA has embarked on extensive drive to ensure
clubs become part of the revitalised Hookin2Hockey program for
pre-school children through to grades 4/5 at school. Additionally, in
2015 Hockey WA will resource and assist local Clubs to contact and
drive programs within local primary schools, promoting modified
entry level skills training and games.
In regional WA, Hockey WA is reviewing its method of delivery
of similar programs, in consultation with DSR and is looking to
enhance the training of existing Regional Development Officers,
to provide contracted coaching to regional hubs and to assist by
providing additional resources through an enhanced online
coaching program.
On the expansion of turf facilities and while continuing to support
clubs in the development of their own turf facilities Hockey WA
is working closely with DSR to identify possible areas where fast
tracking of turf developments which Hockey WA would initially
establish manage and then possibly pass onto clubs can take place.
The President and management of Hockey WA have been over the
last 4 months, working on the Strategic Plan for the organization to
not only address the challenges of sustainability but to also
maximise the opportunities that will present themselves in the
future to grow the sport. At its heart is the engagement with all
stakeholders from government to players and while not yet
complete, it has resulted in a review of the structure of Hockey
WA - a structure that will more closely align with the objectives and
challenges of Hockey WA and will allow all the management team
to focus on strategic issues.
Finally, I wish to thank all the clubs, presidents in particular for their
support over the last year, the Board of Hockey WA for their many
voluntary hours of engagement, the management and staff of
Hockey WA, who over a difficult and often frustrating year of
transition have remained on task, and finally to the many
volunteers so essential to the sport.
To the players, not only for their support and continued
improvement in the quality of the sport, but also for an
improvement in the sportsmanship and behaviour on the field.
In 2013, 5 tribunals were needed to be called to address issues of
violence and poor behaviour, in 2014 only one such tribunal was
required.

This year, 2014, was another exceptionally busy year at the Perth
Hockey Stadium (PHS). We hosted several tournaments
throughout the year, the highlights definitely being the
International Sikh Games; the Australian Masters Men’s
Nationals and Internationals Kookaburras v New Zealand,
Kookaburras v Malaysia, Hockeyroos v Japan and Kookaburras v
India.
The Smarter than Smoking J7/8, J9/10 and J11/12 Club
Championships, and the Smarter than Smoking Regional
Championships for U13 and U15 boys and girls showcased the
current depth of talent in Western Australian hockey.
In June, PHS welcomed the CBH Country Men’s and Women’s
tournaments to town. These championships are always well
supported by our country associations and offer a fantastic op-
portunity for regional players to compete on the stadiums’ world
class playing surfaces. The men trialled, for the first time, moving
all their games onto turf and were fortunate enough to utilise the
facilities at Aquinas College.
Western Australia was also fortunate enough to host two national
championships in 2014, with the U15 Boys Australian
Championships being held in Rockingham, and the U21 Women’s
National Championships being hosted at Perth Hockey Stadium.
This offered a unique opportunity for interstate athletes to play
on and experience the state of the art facilities available here in
Western Australia.
Due to developments within Curtin University campus, we will no
longer have access to Barblett Oval (the oval immediately adjacent
to PHS) and this will have a massive impact on the regional and
club competition formats being played at PHS in 2015 and beyond.
A revised format and/or alternative venues are being investigated
to ensure these events are staged with minimal disruption.
Both pitches at PHS were replaced during the off-season. PHS1 was
replaced under warranty by AstroTurf and PHS2 was replaced with
the revolutionary Greenfields turf. Greenfields was also the World
Cup surface on which the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos competed.
Much of the old turf and some of the remnant new turf were
collected by mums and dads, country associations and schools. The
new surfaces are more water efficient and we are already noticing
a reduction in water use, and we will continue to monitor this
usage into the future.
Turfs were also replaced at Hale and Melville and the second turf
at UWA became available after the end of the season. There is still
a dire need for playing facilities in WA and to this end Hockey WA
will be embarking on a number initiatives to alleviate this shortage
commencing in the first quarter of 2015.

Reports
On reflection, 2014 was very successful for the Bar and Café. At the
start of the year we had a complete review of our objectives and
set ourselves some new goals, with a particular focus on customer
satisfaction and product quality. The bar, the focal point of the
stadium, had a review of products offered to see how our selection
reflected current trends in the market. New beers such as Little
Creature Pale Ale and Little Creatures Rogers were added during
the season and were a hit with patrons, as too was the expansion
of our cider range, as more of our customers start to enjoy
something different on a Saturday afternoon. Our wine list
continued to expand with the inclusion of a more up market range
for our wine enthusiasts.
Functions, a vital part of the hospitality section, also grew in 2014
with new customers Curtin University, Launch Finance, Wesley
College & Trinity College plus the continued support from the
Department of Education, Hockey Australia & the Rostrum Club,
making for a greater contribution from this area of operations.
With the ongoing support of the Department of Sport and
Recreation, we have managed to continue with the stadium
maintenance plan for PHS.
Thanks must go to our volunteers and staff, who dedicated many
hours over the past season to ensure that Perth Hockey Stadium
continued to offer a high quality and enjoyable experience for the
West Australian Hockey community, and continues to be regarded
as the no.1 Hockey facility in Australia.

Reports
2014 has been a period of recognising that we are not performing
to expectation or potential around state teams and player
development. Following on from this we have reviewed and
reflected on our existing high performance landscape, which has
included a formal review facilitated by the Department of Sport and
Recreation. As a result of this process we have commenced forming
and delivering a new vision for WA high performance.
A general focus is to increase the number of development activities
and opportunities for athletes. The program vehicles developed
for this are Holistic Elite Athlete Training (HEAT), Talent Accelerant
Program (TAP), and U15 and U18 Camps and training blocks that
underpin the state teams. There is a 12 month approach now
accommodating appropriate peaks and troughs to integrate with
state teams and club commitments during the winter season.
Officials:
A significant achievement this year has been the establishment
of the Officials Advisory Group. Once again, officials have a forum
whereby they can form common views, focus on development and
generally contribute positively to the officiating environment.
2014 has been a particularly successful year for WA with twenty
four officials participating in National Championship events across
U13, U15, U18, U21 and AHL. Of those Melissa Trivic, Murray
Grime, Scott Embry and Tammy Standley were given International
appointments which included World Cup and Commonwealth
Games.
In the local competition scene, 101 umpires and 12 technical
officials (4 new ones) were appointed on a regular basis during the
course of the season. Sarah Allanson again coordinated the junior
program and received great support from Grant Watton, Cheryl
Murphy, Samn Gibbs-Jones, Josh Harmon, Cam Dudfield, and Kyle
Lister.
SPORT DEVELOPMENT
HIGH PERFORMANCE COACHES & OFFICIALS
For our top athletes we have started work on establishing a system
to manage and deliver a holistic approach to athlete development.
It will be used to communicate, assess, record fundamental
competencies, manage workload and facilitate feedback to our
targeted athletes. It will provide a consolidated database of athlete
information that can easily be accessed by relevant coaches,
service providers, and of course, the athletes themselves. This
system is in development now and on target for introduction early
in 2015.
With the increased volume of activities, full integration of country
athletes is unlikely. To fill this void, we have established a strong
link with the Regional Talent Development Network. We are using
this network to support coaches by providing resources and
information to align with what is occurring in Perth. Supporting
this, there is a standing invitation for identified athletes and
coaches to attend activities in Perth whenever they are available to
do so. Greater alignment between the local association and
academy is required to take full advantage of the support being
provided. We are also moving towards shorter and more focused
state team preparation to accommodate country athletes better.
States are experiencing a period of significant change around
National Championships. Expectation on us to field two state teams
in the U13 and U15 age groups, and allowing clearance of players
who missed selection to opposition states, is requiring a
re-assessment from us on the purpose and objective of national
championship events.
Coaches:
Around 30 coaches were involved in state team programs in 2014.
Without exception, all coaches made a positive contribution to the
performance of WA teams and development of the players. Adding
in off-season athlete development programs, this number is up
over 50 coaches. With Jason Butcher joining Hockey WA during the
year, we are now in a position to increase the level of support and
resourcing provided, which we expect to have a positive impact on
retention and longevity.
During the course of the year we have also started forming a
connection with the country academy coaches, and they are now
receiving information, resources and opportunities for their
scholarship athletes.

Metropolitan team number performance show a healthy growth
of just over 15% over the last decade. Drilling a bit deeper into this
result tells us that this has been achieved almost solely by growth
in Masters hockey. Growth in this category tells us that senior
players, once in our sport are staying involved for longer, which is
a good outcome; However, if it is looked at in isolation it tells us
that growth across all other categories is stagnant. This analysis
does not paint a good long term picture for hockey, and is telling us
that Hockey WA must now lead a process that consults with clubs
to find new solutions, with the backing of appropriate resourcing
to improve metropolitan participation trends. County participation
trends mirror that of the metropolitan results, but without the
same strength in Masters. The logistical challenges associated with
Hockey WA contributing to a positive influence on country
participation need to be overcome. I believe that most successful
strategies to grow participation can be delivered in either a
metropolitan or country environment.
We know that playing our game on turf is an increasing factor
relating to player recruitment and retention. We also know that our
turf to player ratio of 1:1300 is the highest and worst of all States
and Territories. Victoria, the lowest and best is 1:350. Increasing
the number of turf facilities is a difficult task, but one that will
impact the level of success that we can achieve.
With the longer term goal of growing junior participation in mind,
the short term goal in 2014 was to redefine staff roles to reduce
man hours attributed to the competitions area. In doing this it
allowed us to increase man hours in the development area, without
having to increase salary costs to the organisation to achieve it. This
has been accomplished and forms the foundation to re-establish
Hockey WA’s drive towards growing participation.
In 2015 Hockey WA will re-establish a club linked metropolitan
schools program, plus support and direction to country
development officers. We understand that there will be other
strategies required to grow junior participation in the medium to
long term, but based on our knowledge and experience we know
that these two components are pivotal, and as a start will deliver
them in 2015.

The Hockey WA Winter Competition saw some significant change in
2014, with an additional team entering the Melville Toyota League
Women, and the formidable Metropolitan 1 Men’s Grade being put
on hold for a year, due to an insufficient number of teams
nominating. The Women’s Masters Competition also provided
Hockey WA with challenges, due to the increasing number of
players wanting to be involved, and the limited number of turfs
available.
In all, 2014 saw a growth in participation in our competition, in
both Junior and Senior ranks, though with turf space limited, and
the 2nd turf at UWA being unavailable throughout the year, turf
grades were stretched to capacity. The work being conducted in
getting additional turfs online in the not-too-distant future is
integral now to facilitate the growth trends that Hockey should be
experiencing.
Hockey WA shall continue to liaise with clubs over the development
of the Winter Competition, to maximise the enjoyment and
camaraderie of players, both within clubs and between opposing
teams.

The WAIS Men’s Hockey Program was highlighted in 2014 by three
scholarship holders featuring in a World Cup win for the Kookabur-
ras in the Netherlands.
The Kookaburras defended their world title, defeating the hosts 6-1
in the final. Fergus Kavanagh, Aran Zalewski and Tyler Lovell were
all part of the Australian squad.
Preparations for the World Cup started back in January where Aran
Zalewski and Tyler Lovell were members of a youthful Australian
team that claimed fourth place at the World League Finals in India,
before Lovell was joined by WAIS athlete Trent Mitton in competing
in Malaysia at the Azlan Shah Cup, where Australia won gold.
The April two test series against New Zealand saw Fergus Kavanagh
return for the first time in 2014 after a long term back injury.
Another three WAIS athletes, Lovell, Zalewski and Mitton were also
involved in the series, which saw the Kookaburras winning the first
test and drawing the second.
The U18’s WA State Team lost their semi final to New South Wales
in a shoot out, but went on to claim Bronze with an emphatic 5-1
victory over Victoria. WAIS scholarship holders Hayden Walker,
Simon Benetti and James Benetti were all members of the team.
Both Benetti brothers and Walker were then to double up to com-
pete at the U21’s Championships in Sydney. They were joined with
fellow WAIS athletes in Ross Hall, Marshall Roberts and Daniel Rob-
ertson. They lost the semi final to a very talented New South Wales
team, but went on to claim Bronze beating Queensland 3-0.
Another Burras team was announced later in the year to compete
for the Junior Johor Cup in Malaysia. Again, both Benetti brothers
and Walker were selected in the eighteen man team who would
claim a Bronze medal.
Finally, from these junior events throughout the year, athletes
would be named to attend a National Youth Camp on the Gold
Coast in December. Seven WAIS scholarship holders were named
to attend the camp in Frank Main, Matthew Bird, Ross Hall, Simon
Benetti, James Benetti, Marshall Roberts and Hayden Walker.
The WA Thundersticks would lose a close final to Tasmania, who
claimed their first ever AHL title, in a shoot out after the scores
were tied 2-2 at full time. Kiel Brown, Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski,
Fergus Kavanagh, Tyler Lovell, Craig Boyne, Nathan McGuire and
Chris Bausor all competed at the AHL for the Thundersticks. Two
other WAIS athletes in Tristan Clemons,Daniel Robertson also
competed at the AHL for Tasmania and the
Northern Territory respectively as part
of their future development.
The AHL was also used as a selection phase for
the Champions Trophy Squad and the National
Camp. With such a successful AHL campaign
we had six WAIS athletes named in the
Champions Trophy Squad, Fergus Kavanagh,
Kiel Brown, Tyler Lovell, Trent Mitton,
Aran Zalewski and Craig Boyne. We also had
three named for the National Camp in
Chris Bausor, Tristan Clemons and
Nathan McGuire. They will all get to
compete against India in early November
for an opportunity to be selected in
the final event of the year, the
Champions Trophy, which will
be held in India.

After a quick turn around between events we saw Fergus Kavanagh,
Trent Mitton, Aran Zalewski and Kiel Brown all named to compete
at the Commonwealth Games. The Kookaburras would claim Gold
after defeating India 4-0 in the final. This was their fifth
Commonwealth Games title, maintaining their record as the only
team ever to win the Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
In the juniors we saw three new WAIS scholarship holders in
Hayden Walker, James Benetti and Simon Benetti go to Vanuatu
to represent the Burras in the Youth Olympic Games Qualifier. The
shortened five a side format saw the young Burras side still qualify
for the games though losing to New Zealand in the final. Even
though no WAIS athletes were selected into the final team for the
Burras, the team would go onto winning the Youth Olympic Games
in Nanjing China.

The WAIS Women’s Hockey program continued to build on the plat-
form set in 2013. The content of the program maintained it’s focus
on the technical, tactical and physical development of its 13 squad
members throughout the year in line with the direction set by the
national program.
In addition to this, WAIS has taken the next step in our program
development, as we have introduced our Values and Behaviours
Charter for our athletes to follow. This program has been developed
with the athlete group, and it focuses on building a quality training
environment based on the interaction and encouragement of the
athletes towards each other.
Further to this, WAIS launched the Building High Performance
Athletes Program. This introduces athletes to understanding the
mechanisms required to be an elite athlete in terms of the lifestyle,
the mindset and the need for nutrition and recovery in their every
day program.
Achievements
In 2014, WAIS Women’s Hockey was a finalist for Program of the
Year at the Annual WAIS Awards Night. This was a tremendous
achievement made possible by the dedication of the playing group,
and the professional input from the service providers of physiology,
strength, nutrition, psychology and careers and education.
WAIS athletes have been recognised by the national program at all
age groups in 2014. Ashleigh Nelson and Jayde Taylor were mem-
bers of the World Cup silver medal team, and the Commonwealth
Games gold medal team.
Five WAIS athletes were selected for the Australia A tour of China
and Japan in August. Kate Denning, Kyra Flynn, Kathryn Slattery,
Penny Squibb and Katy Symons were all selected for this tour based
on their performances in the WAIS and national training program
environments.
As a result of this tour, 4 of these athletes were selected for Hockey
Australia Champions Trophy Squad, that is in contention for the
November tour of New Zealand and Argentina. Along with Ashleigh
Nelson; Kate Denning, Kathryn Slattery, Penny Squibb and Katy
Symons are all currently training in a full time capacity for a 3 week
period in the national program. The 4 WAIS athletes were part of
10 new institute athletes from around Australia to join the current
Hockeyroo squad.
From our junior program, WAIS have 7 athletes attending the 2014
Youth Camp to be held on the Gold Coast in December. Aimee
Clark, Preah Hetherington, Aleisha Power and Georgia Wilson are
current scholarship holders that will all be attending their second
such camp. Training Agreement members Sienna Archer, Brooke
Capewell and Shanea Tonkin will also be attending their first Youth
Camp.
Activities
Hockey Australia launched their small camps program in 2014. This
format brought together selected institute athletes to attend
position specific training programs where the players were taught
or reinforced the skills taught by the national team and the national
training centre programs.
This is an excellent initiative that continues and refines the
exposure of the athlete and institute coach to the skills and
strategies that are valued by the national coaches. It confirms to
the player the content of what they learn in their home state, and
is a valuable evaluation opportunity as well.
The 4 camps attended by 8 WAIS athletes, (with some attending
multiple camps) were: Goalkeeping and Forwards camp in
Adelaide, Midfield Camp in Melbourne, Penalty Corner Specialist
Camp in Perth, and Defenders Camp in Brisbane. WAIS provides
incredible financial support for the athletes in all of these national
activities, international tours and state team programs and is a key
factor in WA athletes being able to participate in such activities.
WAIS athletes also participated in the inaugural visit to Singapore
where a WA representative team played the Singapore and
Malaysian National Teams. This provided an excellent experience
in all aspects and is a wonderful inclusion to the WA development
program.
2014 has been a successful year as the WAIS athletes continue to
develop on their pathway toward national identification. The
consistency of the approach of the athlete to their weekly
commitment to 6-‐8 training sessions has been a core part this
development.
The access to support services and passionate employees is a
significant factor in the program design. It continues to evolve and
the implementation of stretching classes, speed technique
coaching and agility training, along with the monitoring of
physiological improvement through GPS, heart rate and lactate
data, further add to the improvement of each individual athlete.
The WAIS program greatly enjoys working with the Western
Australia athletes to assist them in their development as hockey
players and elite athletes.

This team played 5 tests against the national teams of both nations
in what was an invaluable playing and touring experience. 3 of
these 5 athletes were ranked in the top 4 places for the tour based
on technical, tactical and mental performance and the ability to
progress to higher honours.
