Annie Leibovitz was born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut. She grew up as the third of six children in a Jewish family with immigrant grandparents from Central and Eastern Europe. Leibovitz studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and developed her photography skills over several years while working various jobs, including living on a kibbutz in Israel in 1969.
