Introduction

The
  Founder

The  founder,  Shaji  Jose  Parayil,  went  for  Camino  de  Santiago,  a  pilgrimage  of  800
kilometers  walk  starting  from  St  Jean  pied  de  Port  in  France  to  Santiago  de
Compostela  in  Spain  to  reach  St  James  Cathedral  where  the  remains  of  Apostle  St
James,  the  patron  saint  of  Spain  and  Portugal,  is  believed  to  be  buried.  There  he
promised  Jesus  and  St  James  to  establish  “Annemarie  Foundation”  as  a  charitable
organization  to  serve  the  poor,  based  on  the  guidance  from  Jesus  Christ  given
through  the  book  of  Mathew,  in  chapter  25  verses  31-46.  The  statement,  “Truly  I  tell
you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters  of  mine,  you
did  to  Me”  is  the  mission  statement  of  Annemarie  Foundation.  “Lighting  the  lamp  of
love”  is  the  tagline,  which  is  implicitly  symbolized  in  the  logo.  While  the  driving  force
behind  the  Foundation  is  the  words  of  Jesus,  the  Founder  loves  and  respects  all
humans,  and  all  forms  of  lives,  as  the  divine  creations  of  God.

The
  Foundation

Annemarie  Foundation  is  a  registered  charitable  organization  (NGO)  operating  in
Africa  -  in  Kenya  and  in  Malawi.  The  primary  mission  of  the  Foundation  is  to  create
good  citizens  in  those  poor  countries  by  supporting  the  education  of  the
underprivileged  children.  We  do  it  by  sponsoring  student  fees  and  other  related
expenses,  monitoring  the  academic  performances  of  the  children  and  staying  in
active  touch  with  those  students,  their  families  and  teachers.

At  the  moment,  the  Foundation  supports  fifteen  children  in  Kenya.  The  students  have
been  personally  chosen  by  the  Founder  after  professional  screening  of  their
academic  records  and  family  circumstances.  They  are  currently  studying  in  some  of
the  best  schools  in  Kenya,  funded  by  the  Foundation.  The  first  student,  Joseph
Mbuthiya  Kanyiri,  selected  and  supported  since  early  2012,  is  currently  doing  his
third  year  Mechanical  Engineering  in  National  Polytechnic,  Nyeri.

In  Malawi,  the  Foundation  operates  in  Zomba  and  Dedza  districts.  Our  first  project
there  was  to  help  build  a  school  (and  a  church)  in  partnership  with  the  villagers  and
well  wishers  in  the  Chabwera  village,  where  around  600  children  are  studying  at
present,  in  Annemarie’s  School.

At  the  moment,  we  are  increasingly  focusing  to  support  Malawi.

Why
  Malawi?

According  to  the  World  Bank  2016  report,  Malawi  is  the  poorest  country  in  the  world
with  the  lowest  GDP  per  capita.  On  top  of  that,  as  per  official  data,  10.8%  of  the
population  are  HIV  infected;;  unofficial  estimates  are  much  higher.  Life  expectancy  is
one  of  the  lowest  in  the  world,  with  HIV  and  Malaria  among  the  major  causes  of
death.  Infant  mortality  rate  as  of  2015  is  43/1000,  one  of  the  highest  in  the  world.  For
every  100,000  live  births  in  Malawi,  807  mothers  die  as  a  result  of  pregnancy  and
childbirth  related  causes.  There  are  6.8  million  children  in  Malawi,  51%  of  the
population.  Out  of  that  6.8  million  children,  one  million  children  are  orphans,  more
than  half  of  them  have  lost  one  or  both  parents  to  AIDS.  Malawi  is  a  landlocked
country,  with  no  sea  ports;;  air  transport  is  also  very  expensive  and  time  consuming.

http://www.unicef.org/malawi/children.html
During  this  month,  in  September  2016,  the  founder  visited  Malawi  again,  his  third
trip.  He  and  the  Malawian  trustees  -  Hon  Charles  Tikhiwa  MP  and  Fr  Sherin
Cheranthuruthy,  a  Capuchin  priest  –  visited  the  remote  villages  in  Zomba  district.    He
was  shocked  by  the  looming  poverty  and  starvation  faced  by  the  people  there  due  to
the  prolonged  drought  which  experts  say  is  caused  by  the  weather  phenomenon
known  as  El  Nino.  Its  just  the  beginning  of  summer  there  and  people  are  already
starving  and  begging  for  food.  This  situation  is  much  different  than  what  he  had
witnessed  during  previous  visits.  Most  of  the  rivers  are  dry  and  its  dust  everywhere.

The  government  of  Malawi  has  declared  a  national  emergency  in  April  2016,  due  to
shortage  of  food  and  a  committee  headed  by  the  Vice  President  of  the  country  is
overseeing  the  disaster  recovery  efforts.  The  bishops  of  Catholic  and  Prebyterian
churches  have  requested  the  international  community  for  urgent  help.  The  World
Food  Program  (WFP)  of  UN  has  launched  the  largest  ever  relief  program  in  the
countries  history,  with  estimates  of  more  than  40%  of  the  population  suffering  from
hunger  already;;  the  worst  summer  months  are  yet  to  come,  from  November  to
February.  Existing  efforts  and  resources  are  hardly  sufficient,  as  we  had  witnessed
there.

Based  on  the  situations  witnessed  there,  the  Foundation  is  currently  working  to
establish  food  counters  (stations)  in  those  villages  and  small  towns  which  will  serve
porridge  to  the  hungry  children  and  elderly.  The  local  Member  of  Parliament,  Hon
Charles  Tikhiwa,  and  Archbishop  of  Blantyre,  His  Grace  Thomas  Luke  Msusa,  have
promised  premises  and  volunteers  to  support  running  these  food  counters.  Many
nursery  schools  will  work  with  us  to  cook  and  serve  food  in  their  empty  kitchens  to
feed  their  children  and  grandparents,  if  we  succeed  to  bring  maize  floor  to  their
kitchen.  Maize  floor  is  their  main  food,  which  they  use  to  cook  porridge,  a  common
meal  locally  called,  Likuni  Phala.

We  plan  to  serve  approximately  500  meals  per  day,  one  meal  per  person,  at  one
such  food  counter;;  they  will  operate  from  November  to  February,  the  most  difficult
months.  The  number  of  counters  we  can  operate  is  dependent  on  the  amount  of
financial  support  we  can  mobilize.

We  have  made  agreements  in  principle  with  more  than  three  dozen  village  chiefs
(locally  known  as  Fumu)  to  support  their  efforts  to  build  nursery  schools  to  house  up
to  200  children  between  the  age  group  of  3  to  5.  Providing  porridge  for  children  in
these  nurseries  are  essential  to  attract  them  and  also  to  convince  their  parents  to
send  their  children  to  school.

The  villagers  will  make  and  provide  us  with  sufficient  bricks,  as  can  be  seen  in  the
picture  below.  We  will  provide  the  remaining  building  materials  and  construct  a
stable  roof  for  the  children  to  study  and  play.
“Truly  I  tell  you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters

This  is  our  primary  mission.  We  liaise  with  local  schools,  churches,  government
authorities  at  the  educational,  women  and  child  development  departments  of  the
Zomba  and  Dedza  districts  to  identify  children  who  are  very  good  in  studies,  who
without  financial  assistance  would  not  be  able  to  pursue  their  secondary  school
studies.  Orphans,  children  of  single  mothers,  single  fathers  and  physically
challenged  children  get  higher  precedence  for  selection  over  the  others.  Once
selected,  we  send  them  to  the  best  schools  in  the  country.

This  is  the  most  urgent  need.  A  donation  of  25  US  dollars  (  1,700/-  Indian  rupees,  or
93  UAE  Dirhms)  can  help  us  to  feed  a  nursery  school  child  for  two  months!!  This
includes  the  cost  of  maize  flour,  groundnut  flour,  salt,  sugar,  firewood,  cost  of
transportation,  monitoring  and  book  keeping,  tip  for  the  local  volunteers  (who  cook,

The  detailed  cost  workout  to  run  a  food  counter  is  shown  below.

Price  per  50  KG  bag  of  maize  grain  =  12,500  Malawian  Kwacha,  approx.  17.5  US
dollars.  Meals  per  one  such  bag  =  250  meals  (persons)  approximately. Thus  to  serve
500  persons,  we  need  two  50  kg  bags  per  day,  per  station,  costing  35  US  Dollars  per
day.  Hence  the  cost  of  food  materials  for  running  a  food  counter  station  for  4  months
from  November  to  February  =  4  X  30  X  35  =  4,200  USD,  per  food  station,  for  four
months.  Approximate  supporting  cost  (transportation,  flour  mills  charges  to  flour  the
grains,  tips  for  volunteers  who  cook,  and  other  similar  expenses)  would  be  around
USD  700  per  station  for  a  period  of  four  months.  Thus  the  total  cost  of  500  meals  per
day,  for  four  months  (120  days)  would  be  around  4,900  US  dollars.

Depending  on  the  finance  we  are  able  to  raise,  the  number  of  food  counters  will
increase;;  the  volunteers,  local  nurseries  and  churches  are  ready  to  help  us  with
premises  and  labor,  thus  enabling  us  to  run  many  such  stations  subject  only  to  our
ability  to  mobilize  the  money  needed  to  run  them.

Support  individual  students  for  secondary  school  studies,  which  is  from  Form  I  (9th

Standard)  to  Form  IV  (12th
Standard).  During  this  trip,  we  have  shortlisted  59  eligible
students  for  secondary  school  studies  who  are  good  in  studies,  but  extremely  poor  to
pay  the  tuition  and/or  boarding  fees.  The  school  fees  per  student  are  as  follows:

1.   150  US  dollars  per  year  for  community  secondary  schools.  They  have  no
boarding  facilities;;  these  are  based  in  local  communities.
2.   150  US  dollars  per  year  for  district  level  secondary  schools.  This  the  fee  for  day
scholars.  Students  with  a  better  performance  at  primary  school  secure  seats
here.
3.   300  US  dollars  per  year  for  district  level  secondary  schools.  This  the  fee  for
tuition  plus  boarding.  Students  with  a  better  performance  at  primary  school
secure  seats  in  such  schools  with  boarding  facilities.
4.   400  dollars  a  year,  in  the  national  secondary  schools.  These  are  the  best  schools
in  the  country.  Students  are  admitted  on  a  merit  basis  based  on  their  primary
school  results.  Many  children  who  gets  admission  here  are  not  able  to  study  here
because  of  the  higher  fees  and  choose  the  community  secondary  schools
instead.

With  more  than  20%  of  the  children  being  orphans,  and  more  than  40%  of  the  entire
population  already  starving  there  is  a  special  need  to  build  nursery  schools  here  in
Malawi.  If  we  can  provide  food  at  these  centers,  they  will  save  the  children  from
hunger  and  malnutrition.  Such  schools  and  the  staff  members  would  offer  care  and
affection  for  those  innocent  children,  who  are  deprived  of  love  and  food.

As  we  build  these  schools,  with  the  support  of  local  communities  who  would  provide
us  bricks  (and  also  sand  in  some  cases),  the  cost  for  building  a  nursery  school  with
three  class  rooms  and  two  external  toilets  is  approximately  2,500/-  US  dollars.
Currently,  we  have  requests  to  build  34  such  nursery  schools  from  local  villages,
which  have  more  than  200  children  in  the  age  group  of  3  to  5  years.

  • 6. “Truly  I  tell  you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters   of  mine,  you  did  for  Me.”  Jesus  Christ  (Mathew  25:40).   Ver  1.0   Annemarie  Foundation   Page 6/11     Our  Projects  in  Malawi     Food  Stations  –  Urgently  needed     Based  on  the  situations  witnessed  there,  the  Foundation  is  currently  working  to   establish  food  counters  (stations)  in  those  villages  and  small  towns  which  will  serve   porridge  to  the  hungry  children  and  elderly.  The  local  Member  of  Parliament,  Hon   Charles  Tikhiwa,  and  Archbishop  of  Blantyre,  His  Grace  Thomas  Luke  Msusa,  have   promised  premises  and  volunteers  to  support  running  these  food  counters.  Many   nursery  schools  will  work  with  us  to  cook  and  serve  food  in  their  empty  kitchens  to   feed  their  children  and  grandparents,  if  we  succeed  to  bring  maize  floor  to  their   kitchen.  Maize  floor  is  their  main  food,  which  they  use  to  cook  porridge,  a  common   meal  locally  called,  Likuni  Phala.         We  plan  to  serve  approximately  500  meals  per  day,  one  meal  per  person,  at  one   such  food  counter;;  they  will  operate  from  November  to  February,  the  most  difficult   months.  The  number  of  counters  we  can  operate  is  dependent  on  the  amount  of   financial  support  we  can  mobilize.     Build  Nursery  Schools     We  have  made  agreements  in  principle  with  more  than  three  dozen  village  chiefs   (locally  known  as  Fumu)  to  support  their  efforts  to  build  nursery  schools  to  house  up   to  200  children  between  the  age  group  of  3  to  5.  Providing  porridge  for  children  in   these  nurseries  are  essential  to  attract  them  and  also  to  convince  their  parents  to   send  their  children  to  school.       The  villagers  will  make  and  provide  us  with  sufficient  bricks,  as  can  be  seen  in  the   picture  below.  We  will  provide  the  remaining  building  materials  and  construct  a   stable  roof  for  the  children  to  study  and  play.
  • 7. “Truly  I  tell  you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters   of  mine,  you  did  for  Me.”  Jesus  Christ  (Mathew  25:40).   Ver  1.0   Annemarie  Foundation   Page 7/11         Support  Education  of  Brilliant-‐but-‐needy  students.   This  is  our  primary  mission.  We  liaise  with  local  schools,  churches,  government   authorities  at  the  educational,  women  and  child  development  departments  of  the   Zomba  and  Dedza  districts  to  identify  children  who  are  very  good  in  studies,  who   without  financial  assistance  would  not  be  able  to  pursue  their  secondary  school   studies.  Orphans,  children  of  single  mothers,  single  fathers  and  physically   challenged  children  get  higher  precedence  for  selection  over  the  others.  Once   selected,  we  send  them  to  the  best  schools  in  the  country.     How  can  you  support  us?     Sponsor  the  Food  Counters     This  is  the  most  urgent  need.  A  donation  of  25  US  dollars  (  1,700/-  Indian  rupees,  or   93  UAE  Dirhms)  can  help  us  to  feed  a  nursery  school  child  for  two  months!!  This   includes  the  cost  of  maize  flour,  groundnut  flour,  salt,  sugar,  firewood,  cost  of   transportation,  monitoring  and  book  keeping,  tip  for  the  local  volunteers  (who  cook,   distribute  the  food  for  the  people,  wash  the  utensils,  …)     Figure  6  Cooking  Likuni  Phala
  • 8. “Truly  I  tell  you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters   of  mine,  you  did  for  Me.”  Jesus  Christ  (Mathew  25:40).   Ver  1.0   Annemarie  Foundation   Page 8/11     The  detailed  cost  workout  to  run  a  food  counter  is  shown  below.     Price  per  50  KG  bag  of  maize  grain  =  12,500  Malawian  Kwacha,  approx.  17.5  US   dollars.  Meals  per  one  such  bag  =  250  meals  (persons)  approximately. Thus  to  serve   500  persons,  we  need  two  50  kg  bags  per  day,  per  station,  costing  35  US  Dollars  per   day.  Hence  the  cost  of  food  materials  for  running  a  food  counter  station  for  4  months   from  November  to  February  =  4  X  30  X  35  =  4,200  USD,  per  food  station,  for  four   months.  Approximate  supporting  cost  (transportation,  flour  mills  charges  to  flour  the   grains,  tips  for  volunteers  who  cook,  and  other  similar  expenses)  would  be  around   USD  700  per  station  for  a  period  of  four  months.  Thus  the  total  cost  of  500  meals  per   day,  for  four  months  (120  days)  would  be  around  4,900  US  dollars.     Depending  on  the  finance  we  are  able  to  raise,  the  number  of  food  counters  will   increase;;  the  volunteers,  local  nurseries  and  churches  are  ready  to  help  us  with   premises  and  labor,  thus  enabling  us  to  run  many  such  stations  subject  only  to  our   ability  to  mobilize  the  money  needed  to  run  them.     Sponsor  a  child     Support  individual  students  for  secondary  school  studies,  which  is  from  Form  I  (9th   Standard)  to  Form  IV  (12th  Standard).  During  this  trip,  we  have  shortlisted  59  eligible   students  for  secondary  school  studies  who  are  good  in  studies,  but  extremely  poor  to   pay  the  tuition  and/or  boarding  fees.  The  school  fees  per  student  are  as  follows:     1.   150  US  dollars  per  year  for  community  secondary  schools.  They  have  no   boarding  facilities;;  these  are  based  in  local  communities.   2.   150  US  dollars  per  year  for  district  level  secondary  schools.  This  the  fee  for  day   scholars.  Students  with  a  better  performance  at  primary  school  secure  seats   here.   3.   300  US  dollars  per  year  for  district  level  secondary  schools.  This  the  fee  for   tuition  plus  boarding.  Students  with  a  better  performance  at  primary  school   secure  seats  in  such  schools  with  boarding  facilities.   4.   400  dollars  a  year,  in  the  national  secondary  schools.  These  are  the  best  schools   in  the  country.  Students  are  admitted  on  a  merit  basis  based  on  their  primary   school  results.  Many  children  who  gets  admission  here  are  not  able  to  study  here   because  of  the  higher  fees  and  choose  the  community  secondary  schools   instead.
  • 9. “Truly  I  tell  you,  whatever  you  did  for  one  of  the  least  of  these  brothers  and  sisters   of  mine,  you  did  for  Me.”  Jesus  Christ  (Mathew  25:40).   Ver  1.0   Annemarie  Foundation   Page 9/11     Help  build  a  nursery  school     With  more  than  20%  of  the  children  being  orphans,  and  more  than  40%  of  the  entire   population  already  starving  there  is  a  special  need  to  build  nursery  schools  here  in   Malawi.  If  we  can  provide  food  at  these  centers,  they  will  save  the  children  from   hunger  and  malnutrition.  Such  schools  and  the  staff  members  would  offer  care  and   affection  for  those  innocent  children,  who  are  deprived  of  love  and  food.       As  we  build  these  schools,  with  the  support  of  local  communities  who  would  provide   us  bricks  (and  also  sand  in  some  cases),  the  cost  for  building  a  nursery  school  with   three  class  rooms  and  two  external  toilets  is  approximately  2,500/-  US  dollars.   Currently,  we  have  requests  to  build  34  such  nursery  schools  from  local  villages,   which  have  more  than  200  children  in  the  age  group  of  3  to  5  years.
