2. Objectives ASM (Artisanal and small scale mining) , a growing concern in many developing countries around the globe. ASM is poverty driven fostering conflict, anarchy, health, safety and environmental hazards and also creating economic issues. World Bank initiative, CASM (Communities and Small scale Mining) is striving to mitigate ASM’s negative impacts. CASM’s endevour has been to transcend ASM from threat to opportunity, mainly in terms of: poverty alleviation Sustainable livelihood Environmental protection Thus AMIS (Artisanal Mining Information System) , an IT enabled decision support tool, has been developed to facilitate CASM for monitoring and evaluating these issues.
