Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer born in 1451 who dreamed of traveling around the world to see what it looked like. He worked as a businessman to earn enough money to become an explorer, and was eventually sponsored by Spain in 1499 to embark on voyages where he determined that the lands "discovered" by Christopher Columbus were not Asia but a new continent, making him the first European to realize that the Americas were not India but a previously unknown land. He loved studying stars and copying maps as a youth.
