This document lists AMD CPU sockets and the processor models compatible with each socket from oldest to newest. Socket A supported early Athlon and Duron CPUs. Socket 754 supported early Athlon 64 chips. Later sockets like Socket 939, Socket AM2, and Socket AM3 supported a range of Athlon, Phenom, Opteron, and FX processors. The newest socket, Socket AM3+, supports the broadest range of recent AMD CPU models.
