The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart has four chambers that keep oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate, improving oxygen exchange efficiency. Blood travels from the superior and inferior vena cavae to the right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, lungs, pulmonary veins, left atrium, and left ventricle before exiting through the aorta. While arteries generally carry oxygenated blood and veins deoxygenated blood, the pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
