Alice in Wonderland, A Creative Project
Hard copy only, MLA style
Length: One single-spaced page
Deadline: Feb 1st
From the chapters that we read and discussed in class, choose at least one character from Alice in
Wonderland. Study your character a little bit by writing down some of the words that she/it says.
In your creative project you are asked to add something to an existing scene and/or to create a new
one altogether. The challenge is to add you-as-character in the narrative. You also need to combine
parts from the original narrative with new ones created however you will see that fit. When you
create these new lines, write them in italics so I can distinguish your voice from Lewis Carroll’s. The
quotes from Alice in Wonderland should appear in bold.
Example:
From “Down the Rabbit-Hole”: “Soon her eye fell on a little glass box that was lying under the table:
she opened it, and found in it a very small cake, on which the words ‘EAT ME’ were beautifully
marked in currants” and “To be sure this is what generally happens when one eats cake; but Alice
had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but-out-of-the way things to happen, that it
seemed kid of stupid for life to go on in the common way” (15).
I was minding my own business, casually sipping frommy lavender tea, listening to music, and
planning my summer vacation -- so pretty much just relaxing on a warm, spring day. Nothing could
disturb my Zen moment, I thought. However, as I was looking through the window, I saw a silhouette
in the distance. At first, I could not make sense if it was a woman’s or a man’s. The more it
approached, the more I realized she was actually a girl, but her body was weirdly proportioned. Half
of it was normal, and the other half was considerably bigger. Of course I pinched myself to see if I
was awake or dreaming. I was unfortunately awake and the girl was coming closer and closer to me.
“Hey, you,” she said out of breath, kind of rude, I thought to myself. “What, are you deaf and blind?!
Can’t you tell that I need help?!” I just nodded because I couldn’t still find my words and I was
afraid that if I did not do anything she would yell at me more. “Look, I need your help….” “What
happened?” “All I did was to bite fromthis delicious cake on which the words ‘EAT ME’ were
beautifully marked in currants and this hideous transformation occurred. I cannot go back home
looking like this. My mother would know I was in Wonderland again. I love it there, but I don’t
always know how to get out of a strange moment, like this one.” I didn’t say anything. She looked at
me differently now. She seemed to realize that I was just as startled (if not more) than she was. Then,
just as casually, she added: “By the way, my name is Alice. What’s yours? If you are bored, and you
kind of show it, just come with me in Wonderland because nothing but out-of-the-way things are to
happen there. Just don’t tell anyone, especially not my mother. Fix me first and I will take you
there.”
This could continue with other quotes from the original; you could link different scenes from
different chapters and create something new. There are no limits to your imagination and/or take on
this creative project. You do need to make yourselves into a character and use the original narrative
by inserting quotes every now and then. Your new lines should be longer than the quotes used.
Have fun!
