Aitor Ocio began his career with his hometown club Vitoria Aurrerá before spending a season with Eibar and then Albacete Balompié, where he played over 34 games. After a good season with Albacete, he signed with Osasuna in La Liga. He then had success with Sevilla FC, becoming their second captain in the 2006-2007 season, before joining Athletic Club. The word "Alirón" comes from when English-speaking mine owners in La Arboleda put up a sign saying "All iron" to tell the miners iron had been found, but the miners who didn't know English said "alirón" instead.
