A presentation by my German undergraduate students as part of the 2013 SPICE Study Abroad program at the University of Erfurt. This one, from the Media Psychology and Influence course.
ABSTRACT: US-American television sitcoms have reached great popularity in Germany. They mostly depict their fictional US-American characters as being materialistically wealthy. The present research proposal hypothesizes that high exposure to the mentioned sitcoms results in high perception of real US-American citizens as materialistically wealthy. This effect is explained by cultivation theory. The effect only occurs if the recipients process the sitcom as portraying materialistic wealth. It is further hypothesized that intergroup contact can suppress or multiply the main cultivation effect. This depends on whether the US-American citizens, to whom the German recipient has contact with, are poor or wealthy - relative to the sitcom characters. Finally, a model is given which synthesizes the introduced constructs and identifies the mediator variable as processing the sitcom as materialistically wealthy. Hopefully, one day, through research and active intervention, we will see a decline of this destructive behavior in schools.

Tom Silverman conducted research to determine how many new artists are breaking into the music industry each year. He defined "breaking" as selling over 10,000 albums in the year of release. In 2008, out of over 105,000 album releases, only 12 artists sold over 10,000 albums for the first time that year. The vast majority of breaking artists were signed to major labels or significant independent labels. Silverman concluded that technology has made it harder, not easier, for great new music to rise to popularity due to a lack of mass exposure, which requires money or luck.

Video games have enjoyed sustained economic and cultural success for nearly four decades, with their success often attributed to their interactive nature: passive audiences become active users with a vested stake in the on-screen experience. However, as games continue their evolution from singular challenge/skill puzzles to narrative-rich virtual worlds, the manner in which we play and are affected by this play has been called into question. Specifically, given that users do not have an unlimited ability to process stimuli, one might challenge the implicit assumption that gamers interact with and are influenced by all on-screen content in a similar fashion. The following presentation outlines emerging theory and research into the ways in which gamers attend to different on-screen content, and how this implicit and explicit attention can impact the overall entertainment experience.
