Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

An insight into building and managing online community
Africa in focus: did you know that… In 2008, internet usage in Africa wasn’t really being tracked in the media. However, between 2008 and 2011, undersea cables have been and will be bringing broadband connectivity to the continent in a major way. There are 1 billion people in 53 countries in Africa. 450 million are under the age of 15. Economist George B.N. Ayittey refers to them as the “The Cheetah Generation,” disruptors of the status quo who will revolutionize Africa and grow up in the information age. 450 million on the continent are mobile subscribers. That number is predicted to grow by 12% through 2013. Ruge thinks it will be even higher due to the youth demand. The rise of Africa’s Digerati We are seeing the beginnings of Technology Centers and Incubation Labs springing up in hub communities in Africa. Ruge predict that these centers will be the launching points for the future tech talents of the continent. Through the magic of video Skype, we had the pleasure of hearing: A team from ··Limbe Labs in Cameroon shared the development of the SMS technologies. ··Appfrica Labs , from Uganda, talked about projects in transparency for African governments, engaging the global market such as Facebook and iPhones, and moving towards creating content mobilely. ··Erik Hersman , also known as ··@whiteafrican , from ··iHub in Nairobi, talked about the need not only people for to meet with each other but also for social entrepreneurs to have access to fast and reliable internet access.

Each of these activity streams can be measured and benchmarked using QLBS InQbate software. QLBS have partnered with New Zealand Government and the NBIA to provide annual reports for incubator networks. The company markets itself as a “measurement system for continuous improvement”. The system has a database of leading indicators which tell incubators and SMEs whether they are up to scratch. It also helps them benchmark themselves against the best in class, so they can then find and close existing gaps.
