Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

Plums come in many different colors, and provide a good source of vitamin C, A, B2, beta-carotene, and potassium. Plums are also a great source of dietary fiber. Plums help to reduce and protect the symptom of cold, flu, asthma, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. It also helps absorb iron in the body, and a great natural laxative.
Cranberries have the ability to prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Their juice contains an antibacterial agent and certain other compounds, which together reduce the ability of E. coli bacteria to stick to the walls of urinary tract.
Cranberries contain quinic acid, which prevents the combination of calcium and phosphate ions to form insoluble stones. Hence, they are also beneficial against the formation of kidney stones.
Studies show that the antioxidant content of cranberries is five times that of broccoli. In addition, a comparison with 19 other common fruits proved that the berry has the maximum amount of antioxidant. This is very important in the treatment of cancer and also helps lower the cholesterol level, to some extent.
Blueberries are powerful antioxidants and hence prevent cancer-causing cell damage of the body. Blueberries helps to preserve vision.
Eating blueberries also prevent different problems related to urinary tract infections. The high percentage of Anthocyanins present in the fruit combats E. Coli. The antioxidant named Pterostilbene in blueberries helps to reduce cholesterol. Blueberries also protect the brain from oxidative stress and reduce the effects of Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Diets rich in blueberries augment learning capability and memory power.
Since strawberries are rich in fiber, they help the body in absorbing nutrients.
Strawberries are good for diabetics, as they help stabilize the level of blood glucose.
Strawberries are said to help in regulating blood pressure and thus, diminishing the risk of heart disease.
Strawberries have been associated with inhibiting the production of cholesterol in the liver.
Increase Libido Sexual Strawberries are rich in folic acid, these acids destroy nutritious homocysteine, an amino acid which can thicken the blood.
Ellagic acid is a phenolic compound that has potential as antimutagen and antikarsinogen.
Being rich in antioxidants, blackberries help the body in fighting free radicals and thus, avoid various types of cancer, especially breast and cervical cancer.
Yet another benefit that arises from the antioxidants in blackberries comprises of protection against chronic disease.
The high tannin content, and the resultant antiseptic and astringent properties, of blackberries makes them good for tightening tissues as well as treating minor bleeding.
Consumption of blackberry has been found to be beneficial for those suffering from diarrhea and intestinal inflammation. blackberry leaves and roots are a long-standing remedy for watery diarrhea, especially in children. Prolonged use of the tea is beneficial for enteritis, chronic appendicitis, and leucorrhea. It has expectorant properties as well.
Bilberries are really beneficial for the human body as it helps in healing diseases like mucous membrane inflammation, varicose veins and diarrhea. Bilberry leaves can also be used to reduce blood sugar level. Bilberry contains hypoglycemic properties that help the body fight against diabetes.
Cherry contains a red pigment called anthocyanin, which helps in reducing inflammation and pain. Cherries reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Daily consumption of cherries effectively lowers blood cholesterol and triglycerides. A cupful of cherries, when taken on a daily basis, helps relieve the discomfort caused due to arthritis and gout.
Apricot is helpful in overcoming disorders like anemia, tuberculosis, asthma, bronchitis, etc. Eating apricots helps in removing gallstones and also destroys intestinal worms. It also aids in digestion, since it reacts as an alkaline, breaking down food particles.
Papaya contains ‘papain’, a digestive enzyme known for aiding digestion.
When consumed ripe, this fruit being easily digestible assists in preventing constipation.
A study reveals that when this fruit is consumed alone for three days, it has a useful tonic effect in the stomach and intestines.
The juice of papaya assists in mitigating infections of the colon. It also helps in breaking down pus and mucus.
The consumption of ripe papaya is said to help in the prevention of cancer in organs and glands with epithelial tissue.
Papaya helps tremendously in preventing nausea, including morning sickness and motion sickness.
Orange is helpful for protection against heart disease, regulation of cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and prevention of kidney stones.
Grapes Cardiovascular Benefits
It is believed that grape seed oil helps reduce the harmful LDL cholesterol and increases the good HDL cholesterol. It is said to prevent coronary heart disease due to the fact that it is rich in flavonoids, which have chemical compounds that fight coronary heart disease. Increase of HDL cholesterol also reduces the risk of coronary artery disease.
Pineapple is known to be very effective in curing constipation and irregular bowel movement. This is because it is rich in fiber, which makes bowel movements regular and easy. For any kind of morning sickness, motion sickness or nausea, drink pineapple juice. It works effectively in getting rid of nausea and vomiting sensation.
It has virtually no fat and cholesterol and is loaded with essential nutrients and vitamins that are needed by the body for overall growth and development.
Juice from fresh pineapple can be used to relieve bronchitis, diphtheria and chest congestion. Not only does it have enough amounts of Vitamin C, but it also contains an enzyme called Bromelain, which is known to dissolve and loosen up mucus.Pineapple is effective in getting rid of intestinal worms and also keeps the intestines and kidneys clean. It is effective in flushing out the toxins from the body, thus making the metabolism healthy.
This enzyme is natural anti-inflammatory that encourages healing. It also brings many health benefits. Bromelain is very effective in treating bruises, sprains and strains by reducing swelling, tenderness and pain
Parsley, in addition to being a source of certain vitamins and minerals, has been used in the treatment of prostate, liver and spleen diseases, as well as anemia, arthritis, and microbial infections. It has also been found useful as a diuretic and laxative.
Kale provides an excellent source of vitamins B6 and C, carotenes, and manganese. It is also a very good source of vitamins B1, B2, and E, fiber, iron, copper, and calcium. Kale has almost three times as much calcium as phosphorus. This is a beneficial ratio because high phosphorus consumption has been linked to osteoporosis since it reduces the utilization and promotes the excretion of calcium.
The iron content in spinach is twice that of other greens. Spinach is also one of the most alkaline foods. This makes it useful in helping to regulate the body's pH balance. Spinach also contains one of the richest dietary sources of lutein. Therefore, it is effective in promoting healthy eye sight and preventing macular degeneration and cataracts.
Wheat grass contains over 100 vitamins, amino acids, minerals, enzymes, essential fatty acids and anti-oxidants. Studies have shown that wheatgrass is a potent inhibitor of several carcinogens. Wheatgrass juice is also rich in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll offers many health benefits. It purifies the blood, aids in proper digestion, prevents tooth decay, helps to detoxify the liver, builds up white blood cell counts, keeps the thyroid gland in balance, cleanses internal organs, supports sex hormones, enhances capillary function, and decontaminates inorganic chemicals.
Brussels sprouts have similar nutritional qualities as broccolli. They are a great source of folic acid, vitamins C and K, and also beta carotene. They are a good source of vitamin B6, fiber, thiamine, and potassium. Brussels sprouts contain several cancer-fighting phytochemicals that are in the form of glucosinolates.
Asparagus is considered a diuretic which means it is a good anti-inflammatory – best for arthritis, asthma
Broccoli also contains the carotenoid lutein, glucosinolates, and phytochemicals that have tremendous anticancer effects.
The glucosinolates in Cabbage function by increasing the antioxidant defense mechanisms, and also by improving the body's ability to detoxify and eliminate harmful chemicals and hormones. Studies have also shown that cabbage is extremely effective in the treatment of peptic ulcers.
Studies have also shown that garlic is effective in lowering blood pressure. Throughout history, garlic has also been used as an infection fighter. A main compound in Garlic called Allicin gives the herb its spice and hot taste and has many properties for health including anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-oxidants.
Building Blocks of Protein, without amino acid we cannot heal wounds. Muscle growth
Alfalfa is good for ulcers, disorders of the skin, digestive system, bones, and joints. It lowers cholesterol and balances hormones and blood sugar. It is good for arthritis and other disorders of the bones and joints. Taken every day, it improves the appetite, relieves urinary and bowel problems, eliminates retained water, and even helps cure peptic ulcers.
Barley decreases the risk of colon cancer and hemorrhoids. Its dietary fiber also provides food for the “friendly” bacteria in the large intestines. These bacteria are helpful in achieving a healthy liver and muscles. Also, barley’s insoluble fiber produces propionic acid. This acid helps in lowering blood cholesterol levels .
Dandelion leaf is an effective herb to use for lowering blood pressure. It is a natural diuretic and contains many vitamins and minerals, especially potassium which can be lost while using a diuretic.Green foods are some of the lowest-calorie, lowest-sugar, and most nutrient-rich foods on the planet. Chlorophyll consumption increases the number of red blood cells and, therefore, increase oxygen utilization by the body. Two of the best sourcces of chlorophyll are wheat grass and barley grass. It is no coincidence that some of the strongest animals in the world such as gorilias, elephants and cows all eat grass and leaves as the main staple of their diets.
Chlorophyll offers many health benefits.
