The Magna Carta was a legal document signed in 1215 between King John of England and rebel barons. It established that the king was not above the law and guaranteed certain legal rights and protections for barons, free men, and the Church in England. Some of its key provisions included limiting taxation without consent, establishing due process including trial by jury, and ensuring certain rights and freedoms for London citizens. The universal right to due process was first created in the Magna Carta, and is currently still in the English law books. Looking at the document more than 500 years later, the U.S Constitution has incorporated many of their laws from the ideas of the Magna Carta.
