We’re After Midnight Jewelers, and we’re truly like no other jewelry store in Vermont.
As one of South Burlington’s locally owned and operated jewelers, we’ve been helping
Vermont get engaged for over 21 years.
We stand against stodgy, traditional, and impersonal jewelry retailers. When it comes to
selling, we take it to a personal level — our store is about 600 square feet, giving it that
close and intimate feeling. We feature front opening cases, allowing us to be shoulder-to-
shoulder with clients and eliminating that intimidating and uninviting “across the

counter” barrier other retailers create. We let you freely try on engagement rings, instead
of locking them away behind glass. One step in our store and you’ll be greeted by our
warm and friendly vibe. It’s no wonder we’ve become the place where Vermont gets

Walk around University Mall and explore the other jewelers and you’ll find the same
boring, cluttered, and intimidating stores. At After Midnight we go against the grain,
and it’s apparent just in our store’s design: stunning copper embellishments by local artist
Kat Clear decorate our sign and back door. This rustic style meets a romantic touch of
elegance with our chandelier and spiral staircase, which leads to a balcony-style
workshop.

My experiences with After Midnight have been nothing less than excellent. I was greeted

I discovered this jewelry store by accident because the jewelry store that used to carry my
favorite designer Kit Heath on Church Street stopped carrying him, and they are the only
other place that carries him in Vermont that I know of. The staff rocked, and (they were

Appraisals
There are many reasons why someone might need an appraisal. These include insurance
documents, point of sale documents, donation appraisals, and estate appraisals. These all
serve different functions, so be sure to request the proper documentation for the specific
job. Since the most common type of appraisal is done to obtain or renew insurance, this
type of appraisal will be discussed here. Donation and estate appraising will be covered in
their own tab (below).

We use the fastest jewelry appraisal software available. It is designed for speed in the way
all the modules work. For most appraisals we can simply make choices from drop down
menus which avoids typing and increases speed and efficiency.
Insurance Appraisals
An insurance appraisal is done so the client can obtain specific scheduled insurance on an item.
The most common insurance appraisal is a replacement type policy. Basically, this policy protects
for most perils and allows for the item to be replaced with a similar item of jewelry. Another type
of coverage is the agreed value policy where the settlement is for cash and not for replacement of
the jewelry. Generally, these policies would carry a higher premium. All insurance matters should
be discussed with your agent to determine what coverage will best serve your particular needs. An
insurance appraisal is required when an item of jewelry is to be scheduled separately on an
insurance policy. Standard coverage might include some aggregate allowance for jewelry.
However, these limits are generally low and may not cover all perils. A separate insurance rider on
any single item of jewelry will generally cover perils including theft, loss, mysterious
disappearance, fire, etc. You should refer to the actual policy for explanation of coverage. A point
of sale document is similar to an insurance document in that a retail value is provided so that the
client can purchase insurance. However, this document may be provided by the actual seller of
the item of jewelry and it will report the actual selling price. In this type of appraisal, the seller is
disclosing his/her role in the transaction. This type of document is valid and is usually acceptable
for obtaining insurance.
Expert Appraiser
Finding the right appraiser requires an investigation of his or her qualifications. Jewelry
appraising, unlike real estate appraising, is not a licensed profession. Some appraisers may belong
to professional associations. It is also recommended that the appraiser have gemological
credentials from a recognized trade school. However, remember that depending on the
assignment, the level of expertise may vary just as it would with a specialist in the medical
profession. A jeweler that does appraisals may not have certain credentials or expertise but may
be qualified to do some appraisals, especially on items that they sold you. Our Master Jeweler has
the highest qualifications and training to provide you with an excellent, accurate appraisal of your
fine jewelry.
Fees
Appraisers will charge different fees depending on their expertise, the difficulty of the assignment,
etc. No single fee structure exists nor would it be fair to suggest what an appraiser might charge.
Some charge by the item’s major diamond size (i.e., more for a larger center diamond and less for

smaller diamonds). Other appraisers charge a flat fee per item. And others may charge by the
hour. In any case, a fee that is based on a percentage of the appraised item’s value is considered
unethical in the appraisal industry. In this case, an incentive exists to inflate the value for a higher
fee. If an appraiser quotes price as a percentage fee this would indicate that he or she does not
adhere to industry standards. The most expensive appraiser is not necessarily the best, nor is the
least expensive necessarily the worst. However, with appraisals, you generally get what you pay
for. The short “one-line” appraisal with a value is not nearly enough information to describe
adequately an expensive engagement ring.
Caveats
The single most important caveat regarding appraisals is the fictitious inflated value appraisal. A
simple rule to follow is that if it is too good to be true, it probably is. Misrepresentation of value is
a major problem in the jewelry industry. Another thing to be aware of is the opposite scenario of
the “lowball” appraisal. Is the person who is doing the appraisal trying to sell you their item of
jewelry by telling you that you overpaid for a piece of jewelry purchased somewhere else? While it
is certainly possible that the professional opinion will lead to an unfortunate conclusion regarding
the value, be sure that the opinion is not intended to get you a refund so that you can buy from
the jeweler doing the appraisal. Often, a buyer will have remorse after a purchase and should they
be looking for a refund, most likely they will need an independent appraiser that does not sell
jewelry to offer an unbiased opinion of value.
Donation/Estate Jewelry Appraisals
When an item of jewelry is being donated to any charitable organization, an appraisal may be
required. The value to be used for tax reporting is most commonly the fair market value. This is
defined as the price that a willing buyer and willing seller would agree upon. An example of fair
market value might be the price that an item sells for at a local auction. Rarely is this price a full
retail price. Depending on the condition of the item and the desirability of the item, the fair
market value might be as low as “scrap” value or rarely, as high as retail value. If planning a
