The Lighting Design Workshop @Eme3 2013 proposes an inmersive experience in the development of a lighting design practice: A hands-on workshop applied to an inspiring context: the former industrial complex of Fabra i Coats in Barcelona.
Lupercales Project: Lighting Up Urban Tactics - IALD Enlighten Europe 2014 Pr...Alberto Barberá
We want to talk and discuss about our nightly urban environment, about the way we create and perceive the nocturnal image of our cities, about the lighting of our streets. The availability of new technologies for lighting does not seem to be altering significantly the methodology applied for this purpose, our concepts about, for example, “quality” of lighting, ergonomy, eficiency, safety… All of these terms should be strongly revised, in our opinion, and the need to renew the obsolete intalations due to energy eficiency requirements is a good opportunity to do so.
We choose experimentation as a tool to develop our proposals, focused in the lighting design of public places, of spaces where there is a chance for social interchange, between people and between people and their environment, their lightscape. We want to arrange conditions for things to happen, for changes to come in this perception/communication of/with space.
We believe in education as a form of producing and distributing culture for a social change, a form of activism and community building. During one of our workshops, many topics appear that we like to apply in practice: DIY, autonomy, the nightscape of our urban environment as part of a visual indentity and heritage, the special care that historic sites, public places and old city centres require in terms of a lighting project… and there is always a concept that flows through everything we do and debate: enablement of citizenship, as a way to favour the commitment of the community in the evolution and planning of their landscape, their habitat. And to develop a personal criteria towards the policies of urban planning, in general.

“When people asks me who I am and how I work I never know what to answer,
I always have preferred to show my work and let it talk for me. I’m an architect,
a bit of an artist, and a team player, and I’d love to be able to call myself a
Lighting Designer in a near future. I am also very perfectionist, organized
and thirsty of new things. My dream is make things come true, small or big,
just make them true.”

3. Let me tell you (better, show you) my sroty about ligh ... It all started with an installation
called “Reflexións” a Catalan word that means reflection and thought at the same time and that was the leitmotiv
and the result of playing with light, flowers and a vaulted space.
After this first experience I decided to learn about light. I joined the First Lupercales workshop in Barcelona.
After this hand on experience with light, fixtures, filters, candles, people, interaction, shades, darkness,... Light
became the story, it didn’t matter who where the main characters the light on it set the narrative. (Conte means
fairy tale)
4. Still in touch with the Lupercales people, I joined them in Chase the Dark 2015 in Barcelona. Making a lamp with
one sheet of paper 1 LED and 1 hour.
Take part in regional festivals it’s been a good training. In Lluèrnia 2015 we designed two actuatuins: “La Lluna en
un Cove” and “Encén el foc”.
From this concept to reality
5. Being clear to me that I want to work with light I decided to take part in the next lighting design masters studies
in Barcelona where I learned how to think with light and how to understand the spaces because of it. Being
an architect I always think with a pencil in my hand, sketching and writing notes in everything to me. Sketches
transform ideas into projects and projects became reality.
They also teach us the importance of mock ups. Light is a tricky material that needs to be confirmed in life as it will
easily surprise you. The more experience I had the more fascinated and hocked I was/am.
6. When we can not perform a Mock up modeling it’s also helpful, as a final project I revised the lighting on Plaça
Catalunya in Barcelona, nowadays the existing installation doesn’t get to sole the functional needs of the space.
So working with different layers of light I tried to design a lighting that encouraged the city citizens and visitors to
enjoy this amazing space and its history during the night. (Bellow: sketches of the concept and images of the model)
7. During the lighting design master studies part of our team gathered to design a little Gadget for the LAMP Lighting
awards 2015. Something small, wearable, and that a kind of light art installation could me made by the hole.
Is there a better way to say good by to an amazing
Master’s studies than with a Light Art workshop?
On this case we team up, and each team had a
dark public scene, 20 powerful lanterns (and 20
people holding each one) different light filters and
20 seconds to make a picture.

8. In Lluèrnia 2016 we wanted to bring the stars down to the Earth making the people believe that the sky is not that
far. Something simple, elegant and poetic.
Working at Santa & Cole has been teaching me a lot about the lighting world from the products design. During
the past year I’ve been working (I still am) on this company projects’ department developing mostly outdoor
projects, and some interior design proposals, always speaking directly to the client. I’ve also been helping the sales
department, assessing them in the light effects that our products can achieve and guiding them through projects or
proposals, and also becoming part of the team in some fairs and presentations. Moreover I took part on briefings
of new products under development.
During my lighting designs studies I’ve learned a lot and working here has given me a bit of the “real life”
approach, leaving me hungry for more. This past year has made me conscious of the light fixtures in the public
realm during the day and discovering that my training, abilities and experience in architecture was always focused
on the daylight never considering what happens when the sun goes off. This realization makes me pay attention to
the world, to whats installed and designed, to the details, and more important to the space by itself, and how is it
lived and perceived.
I understand that light can transform everything, without light some things wouldn’t even exist because we
wouldn’t acknowledge their existence, so I want to get to know this powerful material, I’d love to work with it, learn
from it and grow as a professional and as a person with it. I’m very committed, responsible and a hard worker. I’m
always open to opportunities and new challenges.
I wish this document helps you to get to know me a little I tried to summarize my skills and my experience about
light. Apart from the projects you’ve seen in this pictures I’ve worked on the design, development and constructions
of several houses and some urban planning as a freelance architect or collaborating with other professionals.
