This document discusses a commercial insurance policy that Advantage Risk Solutions arranged for a multi-site clothing and gift retailer. Advantage reviewed the retailer's existing arrangements and found gaps in their coverage. They worked with an insurer to extend the policy to provide additional protection, including accidental damage coverage, tenants improvements coverage, and loss of income coverage in the event a shop had to close. This expanded coverage proved valuable when one of the shop's roller shutters was damaged, forcing a two day closure; the claim was successfully settled due to the insurance being in place.

Little things mean a lot
Simple but robust changes to a programme can make all
the difference. Retailers can be hit particularly hard by
accidents; crime and extreme weather as their premises
is at the heart of everything they do, and crucial to
revenue. We were introduced to our retailer client
through their finance brokers, and they asked us to
review their current arrangements. Carrying out a
thorough analysis allowed us to see where the gaps
were, and how we could widen cover to ensure they
were protected at all levels.

Safety first
We worked with a reputable insurer to arrange cover to
include not just fire and perils, but also for accidental
damage. Whilst contents and stock were included in the
original policy, shop fittings were not, so cover was
extended to include Tenants Improvements. We also
found that business interruption cover only accounted for
increased costs following a loss. This includes costs like
temporary relocation, or hiring temporary staff. It’s good
to have in place, but not realistic for a retailer, who can’t
have staff work elsewhere to keep the business running
and money coming in. We made sure we arranged wider
cover to include increased costs and the loss of income
in the event of any shop closure.
Standing up to the test
The small addition to the premium was worth the peace
of mind for the level of cover – and it proved crucial as
only three months later a malfunction in a roller shutter
caused damage in several areas, meaning the shop
had to close for two days. Due to the cover they had in
place, the claim was successfully settled and they were
quickly back to business as usual.
