Study Abroad at MSU
MSU currently ranks in the top 10 for both international student enrollment and study abroad participation (according to the most recent IIE Open Doors report).
More than 3,200 students went abroad for learning activities sponsored by MSU last year.
We offer more than 275 programs in over 70 countries on all continents.
Recently, MSU committed to a national effort to increase study abroad participation by 2020 through a new five-year initiative called Generation Study Abroad, and has set specific targets to expand participation and double endowments for study abroad scholarships.
Meeting these goals will result in a more diverse student body going abroad and a greater variety of experiences in which they participate.
It also increases visibility to students who think study abroad isn’t an option for them.

Study Abroad at MSU
There is a long-standing commitment to international education at MSU and tremendous support from our faculty, as a result:
About 25% of MSU undergraduates have studied abroad by the time they graduate. Compare that to fewer than 10% of all U.S. undergraduate students (including community college students) at the national level
In a survey asking newly admitted MSU students what they see as valuable opportunities provided by MSU, study abroad is mentioned more often than any other program.
A major MSU studying assessing the impact of study abroad on student learning shows that students who study abroad take less time to graduate and have a higher cumulative GPA at graduation.

FSA’s allow recently graduated, first-year Michigan State University students to explore intriguing topics in small, active, learning environments abroad.
It combines the intercultural experience with work on skills that help students succeed in the big transition to college life.
These programs occur during the summer between students’ high school graduation and the start of the MSU school year, typically from mid-July and mid-August. All programs include several days on campus as a pre-departure orientation and travel, as a group, for 10 – 14 days overseas.
MSU faculty and staff design these seminars to help students:
Learn about global issues related to contemporary, real-world problems,
Learn about college-level expectations and skills,
Improve critical thinking, writing, and reading skills,
Develop personal and professional support networks, and
Engage with global peoples, places, and cultures.
Summer 2015 seminars will take place in Brazil, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa and Spain & Morocco. There is also one seminar specifically for students in the Honors College that takes place in Cuba over winter break.
If you didn’t pick up a flyer at the Resource Fair last night, I have a few, but you can also find information on our webpage (studyabroad.msu.edu)
Safety
MSU is nationally recognized for its focus on safety

Required pre-departure orientation for students where information about personal safety and emergency procedures are shared
On-site faculty required to attend emergency training and have international cell phones
Emergency procedures are in place for evacuation and/or relocation
Collect-call phone available for program leaders and students to call in an emergency to report an incident or are in need of assistance

Program costs can be confusing since they vary dramatically and do not cover the same expenses for all programs.
Many factors may influence the cost of a program. The most important of those are:
Program length and timing
Faculty staffing (MSU faculty or host-country faculty)
Location of the program
Type and inclusion of housing and meals
Number of field trips and activities
Number of credits and student status
International and on-site transportation
For that reason, it’s not easy to offer an example of the cost of a typical study abroad program.
Individual cost information is available on each program’s webpage; students should feel free to discuss finances with the program leaders, OSA staff or the financial aid office for clarification.

Financial aid and scholarships are available to ALL students who study abroad
72% of students receive aid; not just for the affluent
Financial aid
Students can apply for either need-based or non-need-based aid (mostly loans)
Careful planning is important: an increase in federal loans for study abroad may impact loans available for subsequent on-campus study
In most cases, the same aid received on campus can be applied to a study abroad program (i.e. MET)
Generally speaking, gift aid (money that does not have to be paid back) only covers about 28% of the total cost.
Scholarships
Scholarships are available from OSA, MSU colleges and external sources
Some based on academic performance, others take into account financial need
Some local, some national
Some for specific programming (China), some for specific students (RCPD)
The Office of Study Abroad awards approximately 500 scholarships per year from endowments totaling more than $4 million.
