Higher-end Intel Xeon processors can support more virtual machines and save on total costs of ownership compared to lower-end processors. Testing showed that upgrading to a newer, higher-bin Intel Xeon processor allowed servers to support more VMs before performance was impacted. While a processor upgrade costs more initially, the performance boost offsets the cost over five years of operation by reducing the number of servers needed. Testing of the Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4, E5-2630 v4, E5-2650 v4, and E5-2660 v4 processors showed each successive upgrade supported more VMs and had a lower five-year total cost of ownership.
