Abstract - under vehicle scanning system to observe under carriage of a vehicle automatically. In
Sri Lanka there is a huge requirement of protecting important places in government and non-
government sectors. Among them Military bases are highly vulnerable places due to the terrorist
activities. Currently they are using a mirror to check the bottom side of the vehicle. But the
accuracy of the scanning is depend on the person who checking and light condition available.
Another thing is the person who going to check the vehicle is taking a high risk. Therefore it is
huge requirements to have an automatic system which can be operate without a person both day
and night.
Such system has many advantages. Main advantage is in previous systems the person who
checking the vehicle highly exposed to great threats. People got killed in such incidents. By
using this system we can minimize the harms can be affecting to the people. Another thing is the
system can identify the threats by itself. In this matter the accuracy of the system is higher than
the previous systems.
These kind of systems can be applicable in any entrance where the security is highly concerned
such as military bases, security barriers, airport, harbor and etc…
The under vehicle monitoring system mainly contains two parts. A scanning unit and analyzing
unit with workstation. The scanning unit consists of a line camera and infrared LED lighting
unit. Through a small slit in the scanning unit, the camera captures the entire bottom side of a
vehicle in moving traffic. A complete bottom side of the vehicle will be displayed as high
resolution image on the screen. In the analyzing unit this image will be compared with the
database if there is any differences the system will automatically notify you. The system
provides the guards with all collected vehicle data on the control screen. Additional information
can be entered manually.
