Nishtha Saraswat will present an oral abstract on performance based design of earth and embankment dams in seismic zones. The presentation will discuss how the design of seismic resistance for dams has shifted from a strength-based approach to a performance-based engineering approach. It will emphasize limit state design and compare performance-based methods to traditional force-based seismic methods. The results showed that performance-based methods provide consistent design solutions for withstanding dynamic loads from earthquakes on earth and embankment dams.

Dam is one of the biggest lifeline structures built to serve the purpose of irrigation, hydroelectric power generation,
domestic and industrial water supply etc. which are integral for human survival. Due to frequent occurrence of
earthquakes and the catastrophic consequences of failure of earth and embankment dams of unprecedented size . It is
especially important to construct dams that can safely withstand the strong earthquakes. This paper
presents the effect of earthquake loads on earth and embankment dams and further emphasizes on limit state design,
also called as Performance based engineering. The design of seismic resistance has been undergoing a shift in the
past 20 years with focus shifting from ‘strength’ to ‘performance’ based design. There is growing realization of the
fact that increasing strength may not necessarily improve the performance of the design in terms of strength of
reduction of damages. Here performance based methods are discussed in context of of traditional force based seismic
method. The results show that performance based methods result in straightforward and consistent design solutions
under dynamic loads on earth andembankment dams.
