Abstract
Rice, a staple food for majority of the world's population and is also India's preeminent
crop, and remains a staple food for the people of eastern and southern India. The growing
population of India along with its changing food habits needs around 130 million tonnes
of rice by 2025. The country's area, production and productivity of rice is found to be
42.75 million hectares, 105.24 million tonnes and 24.62 qtls/hectare in 2012-13 crop year
(July-June). Zamindara Rice and General Mills in R.S.Pura tehsil of Jammu district is the
old mill of J&K state and provides good quality basmati rice (Basmati – 370). From the
business point of view, the mill is earning yearly a profit of `1.04 crore. Among the costs,
the yearly costs including raw materials, electricity charges, labour charges and salaries of
permanent employees was worked out to be `5.25 crore approximately while as the total
returns from all the sources such as selling of different graded rice, husk, rice polish etc
amounts to `6.29 crore approximately.
