Neil deGrasse Tyson has enjoyed calligraphy and writing since childhood when he would practice copying letters from the New York Times banner. In graduate school, he received his first fountain pen as a gift, which allowed him to combine calligraphy with something he was proud to display. Today, Tyson collects pens decorated with astronomical themes and symbols that inspire him. He enjoys writing by candlelight to feel connected to medieval monks and gain understanding of solving problems throughout history.
