ALFRED – The incom-
ing president of Alfred
State College said Saturday
that he is “more than excit-
ed” to have been appointed
the next leader of the state
school.
The selection of Dr. Ir-
by “Skip” Sullivan, cur-
rently the president of
West Georgia Technical
College, was announced
by the State University of
New York
(SUNY) Fri-
day after
his appoint-
ment was
approved by
the Board of
Trustees.
West Georgia Techni-
cal College is a unit of the
Technical College System
of Georgia, which pro-
vides education for a sev-
en-county area.
Sullivan’s selection fol-
lowed “an intensive search
and interview process”
conducted by the SUNY
president and a Presiden-
tial Search Committee, the
Board of Trustees said.
“I’m certainly honored
and feel privileged to be
selected to be the next
president of of Alfred State
College,” Sullivan said. “I
am more than excited to be
there.”
Sullivan, who will
earn an annual salary of
$190,000, succeeds Dr.
John M. Anderson, who
left the Allegany Coun-
ty college in March to be-
come president of Mill-
ersville University of
Pennsylvania. Valerie B.
Nixon of Canisteo has
served as interim presi-
dent during the presiden-
tial search process.
Sullivan’s appointment
as president is effective on
or after Jan. 2, 2014, SU-
NY said.

he largest group

teachers in the
state supports Com-
mon Core standards,
but agree there are
flaws and want testing
to stop.
New York State PTA
President Lana Ajemi-
an last week said, “We
remain strongly sup-
portive of the Common
Core standards, but
the implementation of
these standards needs a
significant course cor-
rection. A rushed im-
plementation, com-
bined with excessive
testing, has already
shaken confidence in
the Common Core. We
cannot afford more
confusion and discon-
tent over what is other-
wise a worthy effort.”
A few Common Core
facts:
n Common Core is
simply new national ed-
ucation standards adopt-
ed by 45 states, including
New York.
n They are focused on
math and language arts.
Common Core focuses
on core conceptual un-
derstandings and pro-
cedures, starting in the
early grades up to 12th
grade.
n The standards are
designed to be relevant
to the real world, reflect-
ing the knowledge and
skills needed for success
in college and careers.
The state PTA is
more than 300,000
strong. More than
half are parents, with
the rest representing
teachers.
Ajemian said the
group wants tests to
halt for one year. The
decision comes as
groups against Com-
mon Core have popped
up all over the state.
Locally, groups attend
school board meetings
to voice their concerns
based on early results.
This is not lost on
Ajemian.
“The voices of our
membership have been
as passionate as we ev-
er have about any issue.
It’s that important,” she
said.
