This study investigates serum total bilirubin levels in diabetic patients with retinopathy, without complications, and healthy controls, finding significantly lower bilirubin levels in those with retinopathy and poor glycemic control. The results suggest a negative correlation between bilirubin levels and key diabetes markers such as fasting blood sugar and HbA1c. Overall, high serum total bilirubin may serve as a protective factor against the development of diabetic retinopathy, indicating its potential role in managing diabetes complications.
