A mysterious "Monkey man" terrorized the author's hometown of Ghaziabad in 1999, attacking people from rooftops during power outages. For two months, news channels covered frequent sightings and attacks by the Monkey man, who was rumored to have iron nails, a spring-like body that allowed jumping to great heights, and an unknown origin. While some attacks were genuine, police eventually discovered many were fraudulent acts by antisocial elements intended to scare people. The Monkey man incidents caused disturbances for several months before tapering off without a clear resolution.
