2.  In today’s contentious political climate, with the government
more divided and dysfunctional than at any time since the
1860s, a proposal from the president won’t necessarily make it
through Congress. This is one that should. President Obama has
proposed $156 million for research into Alzheimer’s disease,
including $26 million intended for the care of Alzheimer’s
patients.

3.  The proposal is a fleshing-out of an earlier statement by the
president, as reported in Kaiser Health News. At that time, the
president called for a national plan to deal with the disease. The
announcement was greeted skeptically because of the lack of
funding; hopefully the present proposal will allay that criticism.
Aside from the $26 million for patient care, the proposal
allocates the remainder to research in the hope of improving
future care and perhaps systematic prevention of the disease.

4.  Alzheimer’s disease is not only a heartbreaking affliction that
takes a loved one away from his or her family while the body
lingers on and on, but also a major challenge for New York
asset protection and NY estate planning. Because an
Alzheimer’s patient normally requires increasing levels of care
for years, the cost of caring for an afflicted family member can
be enormous even in purely monetary terms.

5.  While the proposed allocation of federal funds will not
fundamentally change that equation, any effort into learning
more about the disease and to find better treatments or ways to
prevent a debilitating disease that afflicts an estimated five
million elder Americans is worth doing. Alzheimer’s tends to
slip through the cracks of elder law and elder care.
