- In 2005, concerned citizens in Asheville began dreaming of creating a new school to help underserved students in the community. An after-school tutoring program was started that same year. - Test scores showed large achievement gaps between white and black students, and low graduation rates for black males. Many programs in public schools failed to improve scores. - New City Christian School opened in 2006 with goals of providing strong academic and social foundations to equip students for success. In its second year, all students achieved high test scores and growth. - New City School needs ongoing scholarship funds, capital donations, and seed money to expand programs and add a preschool, in order to continue eliminating the achievement gap.
