롱샷에서 배경의 비중이 크고 소리역시 배경음이 크게 들린다 .  특히 물소리나 계곡 산속 전체 소리가  합쳐져 들리게 조정한다 . In a long shot, ambience sounds are heard louder than the sounds heard from the characters. The viewers hear the combination of the sounds of the river and the woods.
점차 샷의 크기가 줄어들고 이 경우에선 물소리가 더 크게 들릴 것이다 . As the shot get closer to the character, but not really close enough to the character, we hear more loud sounds of the river flowing.
여기서는 낙싯대를 감아 올리는 소리가 상대적으로 크게 들린다 .  샷의 크기가 줄어들고 점차 배경음보다 인물의 행위에 의한 효과소리 ( On Screen Sound) 가 크게 들린다 . As the shot is closer enough to the character, we hear more sounds from the character, such as rolling up the fishing pole. The closer the shot is, the louder the sound from the character.

One cannot be at the same time all eye and all ear.  시각을 위한 것이 완벽하게 주어져 있을경우 ,  청각을 위한것에 아무것도 혹은 거의 아무것도 주지 않는다 . 동시에 어떠한 것도 모든 시각과 모든 청각으로 함께 존재할 수 없다 .
When a sound can replace an image, cut the image or neutralize it. The ear goes toward within, the eye toward the outer.  소리가 이미지를 대신할 수 있는경우 ,  이미지를 없애거나 중성화시켜라 .  청각은 내부로 시각은 외부로 .   A sound must never come to the help of an image, nor an image to the help of sound.  소리는 이미지를 돕기위하여 존재해서는 안되며 ,  이미지또한 소리를 돕기 위하여 존재해서도 안된다 .   If a sound is the obligatory complement of an image, give preponderance either to the sound or to the image. If equal, they demage or kill each other in turn through a sort of relay.  소리가 이미지의 필수적인 보완물일 경우 ,  소리 혹은 이미지 그 어느한쪽에 우월성을 준다 .  소리와 이미지가 한쪽의 우월함이 없이 동등할경우 ,  그 둘은 서로를 손상시키거나 파괴한다 .
Image and sound must not support each other, but must work each in turn through a sort of relay. 이미지와 소리는 서로를 지원해서는 안된다 하지만 그둘은 순서대로 일종의 교체를 통해 작용해야 된다 .   The eye solicited alone makes the ear impatient, the ear solicited alone makes the eye impatient. Use those impatiences. Power of the cinematographer who appeals to the two senses in a governable way. Against the tactics of speed, of noise, set tactics of slowness, of silence.  시각이 단독으로 간절히 요구되어질때는 청각을 조바심나게 만든다 ( 애타게 기다리게 혹은 궁금하게 만든다 ),  반대로 청각이 단독으로 간절히 요구되어질때는 청각을 조바심나게 만든다 .cinematographer 의 능력이란 위의 두감각을 다스려나가며 호소할 수 있어야 한다 . 빠른속도에 대해서는 천천히 속도를 맞추고 , noise 에 대해서는  silence 의 병법을 취한다 .
