everyone is motivated in the same way

• Why are people motivated?
• Motivation can enhance employee performance and
attitude as well as learning as a whole
3. Extrinsic versus Intrinsic
• Extrinsic motivation – when someone is looking for
some type of reward for achieving a goal.
• Intrinsic motivation – when someone achieves a goal
because they enjoy the fulfillment of doing so.
• Intrinsic ex. – mastering a new skill because people
want to seek the satisfaction of perfecting the skill.
• Extrinsic ex. – money is an extrinsic motivator
because people can then buy things that they desire
so they work hard to make the money.
4. Why are people motivated?
• Status-seeking
• Success by avoiding failure
• People want to be known for accomplishing
something and this status-seeking goal serves as
motivation.
• Secondly, people strive to be successful because they
don’t want to fail at their attempt; therefore they are
motivated to succeed, rising above failure.
5. Job satisfaction affects motivation in
the working world
• When employees feel that their expectations have
been met at work, they are more motivated to work
hard.
• Hotel employees were motivated to work because
of:
– Job environment
– Experience
• Even when negative things happened on the job,
because expectations were met, their motivation
level was still high.
6. Good ways versus bad ways to
motivate
• Two good ways
– Discipline – certain circumstances allow discipline to be a
better motivator to perform than a reward.
– Consistent and various forms of motivation – motivation
can’t be a one and done concept and motivation must be
varied
• Two Bad ways

– Extrinsic rewards as an incentive
