Is Emetophobia different from Anorexia Nervosa?Emanuel Mian
Paper presented at 2008 Alpbach Conference by Dr.Emanuel Mian, PhD-Psychologist and CBT therapist.
INTRODUCTION:Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting or to see others doing the same. Sufferers are also scared of nausea because of its strong link with vomiting. Emetophobics pay great attention to every gastrointestinal symptom and refuse to consume foods with fats or carbohydrates needing continuos reassurances on food content and avoiding social occasions where they are pushed to eat. This behaviour quickly force them to stear to underweight and many are often wrongly diagnosed as having an Eating Disorder mainly Anorexia Nervosa.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate differences between Emeophobia and Anorexia Nervosa patients.
METHOD:Nineteen (19) women with Emetophobia (EPH) and twenty (20) women with Anorexia Nervosa Restricting Type (ANR) of the same age were recruited and randomly selected from an outpatients group at the beginning of treatment. They were subministered the Eating Disorders Inventory (Gardner et al, 1993), the Symptoms Checklist 90 (Derogatis, Lipman & Covi, 1973), the Body Attitude Test (Probst et al, 1995) and the Rosenberg Self Esteem Test (Rosenberg, 1965).
RESULTS: EPH patients had significant higher scores in EDI Ineffectiveness, BAT Lack of Familiarity (factor 2), SLC90 Paranoid Ideation and RSE Total Score while ANR patients had higher scores in EDI Drive for Thinness, Body Dissatisfaction, Enteroceptive Awareness, SCL90 Interpersonal Sensitivity, Anxiety, BAT Total and Body Dissatisfaction.
CONCLUSION: More research is required to explore the distinctive eating patterns and body image issues in order to discriminate these two distinct psycopathologies
Body Image: a new method for the assessmentEmanuel Mian
Paper presented by Dr. Emanuel Mian at the International Conference on Eating Disorders of the Academy of Eating Disorders- Barcelona 2006.
Body image disturbances have been a challenge for researchers working on eating disorders in the last thirty years. Body focus and a general fear to gain weight are often cited as a causal and/or maintaining factor in eating disorders. For too long, research on body perception in eating disorders has been focusing on accuracy of body size estimation in a rather simplistic way. There is a strong need for new and valid instruments in body image assessment methods. The present study reports on the development of a body image assessment instrument combining a complex subject’s image simulation technique and simplicity of administration. Furthermore, we report on a pilot study, testing the new digital sys- tem in hospitalized eating disorder patients of St-Jozef’s Center (Belgium) and Villa Garda’s Clinic (Italy). Women with clinical eating disorders (n = 66) and normal controls (n = 34) estimated their actu- al (cognitive task), felt (affective task), supposed by others (meta- cognitive task) and desired (optative task) body size while using the computer-based simulation technique on a video screen. In the cog-

Wrong eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction often appear during adolescence and can be prodromic of an Eating Disorder (ED). The “Body Image 2007” (BI07) preliminary survey, originates from the growing need to aquire informations about eating behaviors, ED knowledge and body image of Friuli Venezia-Giulia's (North-East of Italy) teenagers. The survey included ED knowledge, body image, eating habits, alcohol abuse, cultural pressure for thinness, physical appearance and self-esteem.
Ninety students (male n=50 ; female n=40 ; mean age 15 +/- 1) attending a secondary school in Trieste were assigned to the BI07 survey. They were also subministered the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT12), the Inventory for Screening of Eating Disorders (ISED) and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI2) to evaluate risk factors for an ED.
Results indicate that binge episodes were frequent between male sample instead than in female one ((F = 6,716 ; p < 0.01) and was correlated (r = .51 ; p < 0.01) with EAT12 Bulimia subscale. Self-esteem was higher in males (F = 28,226 p < 0,0001) that were rarely on a self-managed diet than female students ((F = 57,973 ; p < 0.0001).This result was correlated (r = .76 ; p < 0,0001) with Drive for Thinness EAT12 subscale. Female students rated their physical appearance significantly higher (F = 8,875 p < 0.005) than males, and this was correlated (r = .47 p < 0.01) with body dissatisfaction. The findings of BI07 give encouraging results and will continue in a forthcoming study on larger samples.

The document discusses using surface entropy reduction (SER) mutations to improve crystallization of an RNA-Fab complex. Key points:
- SER mutations were identified on the Fab surface using software to reduce flexibility and promote crystal contacts. Mutations were incorporated using Kunkel mutagenesis.
- Mutant Fabs (Fab2SMA, Fab2SMS) were expressed at 3-4 mg/L and bound RNA similarly to the wild type Fab. Initial crystal hits were found for the mutant complexes.
- The SER approach aims to generalize to other RNA-Fab complexes, as demonstrated by binding of mutant Fabs to the VCIII riboswitch. Optimization of crystal hits is ongoing to improve diffraction resolution

A/B split testing is a technique used to optimize websites by simultaneously testing two versions and measuring which performs better according to a key metric like conversion rate or revenue. It involves defining the metric of success, testing variations of pages or features, and making changes based on the results to improve user experience and business outcomes. Examples show that A/B testing can significantly increase conversions by changing checkout processes or reducing form fields.
