Editor's Notes
Offshore Drilling is a recent and heated debated. A spark of this debate has been the BP oil spill. I have researched whether offshore drilling is still worth it even with the current risks.
Offshore drilling is drilling anywhere is water, mostly for oil.
Offshore drilling provides jobs, such as building the oil rigs and working on them. The economy also improves when large amounts of oil are being found. Another benefit is states that drill offshore receive cash benefits from the government. Offshore drilling gives people oil that is used as a fundamental energy source.
Offshore drilling becomes a risk to the environment when the oil spills or leaks into the ocean. The oil can cause a large amount of damage to the ocean’s fragile ecosystem, and the economy. Oil rigs exploding also can harm or kill people on board.
Some earth friendly alternatives for energy are wind turbines and solar panels, another option that is perhaps not as earth friendly is nuclear energy.
Through my research I have discovered that offshore drilling is worth the risk. The only way this is possible though is if there are many frequent inspections and strict regulations are put into place. If this is followed and strictly enforced then oil spills will be minimized and it will be safe to drill.
