6 Rooted in Time: Velbroeksdraai
1. This was once a notorious spot for drivers, due to the narrow, sharp bend
The name Veldhoekdraai is an agglomeration of
three words: veld = bush or savanna; hoek = hook;
draai = corner. Somehow (possibly because of a
simple mispronunciation) Veldhoekdraai became
Veldbroeksdraai (broeks = pants).

“Ek Saag Stander het ook vroeer jare baie die
olifante tussen die Bakhuise (kruising van
Rondebosrivier op pad na Ysternek omtrent 500m
van die Bakhuise Noord) en die Poskassie by Diep-
walle (waar die eerste pad wegswaai vanaf
Veldbroeksdraai Suidekant) gekry terwyl ek hout
vervoer het vanaf Buffelsnek na Ou Thesens
Saagmeule op Knysna.”
“I, Saag Stander, often saw elephants in the early
years - between Bakhuis (at the Rondebos River
crossing on the road to Ysternek, about 500 metres
from Bakhuis North) and the postbox at Diepwalle
(where the first road swings off on the southern
approach to Veldbroeksdraai) when I was
transporting wood from Buffelsnek to the old
Thesen’s Sawmill in Knysna.” (Saag Stander was
a resident of Knysna)

Originally known as Veldhoek-
draai, this was a once notorious
spot for drivers: very narrow,
with a sharp bend that
reminded one of a fish hook.
To get anything but the
smallest vehicle past the
corner, you were forced to edge
your way round it through a
series of forwards-and-back-
wards maneuvers.
